When I download a picture from my camera, or scan a document with my scanner, it all goes into "My Pictures". That is okay, but everything also becomes a choice in (Display Properties) desktop (selection). That is not okay, as you can imagine.

How do I stop this and how do I get them out of that area???

XP will always display the pictures in the My Pictures folder in the list on the Desktop tab.
Just make a new folder inside the My Documents folder and move the pictures into it.

Windows automatically reads everything in the "my pictures" folder. I do not think it can be changed.

The folder your camera and scanner are using should be an option in your camera/scanner software. Just change the folder to another place.

Your choice from download location (im assuming thats what you are saying) is likely just a followup to the last place that you installed or downloaded something (such as your pics). You can sure pick another spot!
