I think simply because they can. They can say anything they want due to the fact they are annonymous . Would they have the courage to talk so freely in person, probably not. Even if these sorry little people get reported and suspended they will just start a new file.I don't get bothered by it anymore nor with the thumbs down.I figure that at least someone has read my answer. You are right most people are really nice on here and as strange as it may seem people become like friends.Take care.

I have answered a question just like this many of times. And I say the same thing every time.. people are people. Some are rude because they don't know how to be civil unless it is something they agree on. Some people are judgmental and don't think about what a person might feel if they degrade them. Its just another thing in life that bothers us but yet we can do nothing about it.
Try to look past those people.

I used to ask questions all the time here, but as of late I only ask things that I really need to know because so many people are 'point whores' and will rudely answer questions to make themselves feel smart, or what annoys me more is when I'll ask a question, and someone replies, "I don't know" "idk" or just put "." Or they like to call people dumb. I truly think they only do that to make themselves feel smart because most of them aren't.

They think it's clever Bex and makes them feel big and important. Even if you disagree with what somebody else has said or with their opinion etc it doesn't automatically give you the license to start ranting and raving and being downright rude and in some cases personally insulting. You can answer a question constructively giving your own opinion without having to resort to rudeness.

It is just a reflection of the real world - you will get all types in here.
No one's questions are any better than others - just keep asking away, that is what this place is for!
Ignore the names - those insults have no basis if your questions aren't inflammatory.

Some times it's just plain overwhelming and irritating at the level of stupidity of some people. For example, how many times can someone ask about penis size? People fail to search for answers before they ask.
Although I'm not rude, at least I don't think I am, I do get irritated at the level of incompetence with the English language. I'm not talking about mispellings or simple grammar errors that just about everyone makes, God knows I'm not very good at it; we're talking about questions and answers being incomprehensible.
The use of d00d speak and text messaging speak is also extremely irritating. Combine those with the lack of basic English skills and it's a total nightmare.
Now, I'm not referring to people who are not native English speakers. There are signs when you encounter people in that class. I'm talking about people who were born here and English is their primary language. It's hard to be civil.
The other irritating issue is people who ask asinine questions. Something like, "my daughter has a temperature of 104 degrees and hasn't eaten in four days, what's wrong with her?" Or, "I have a weeping sore on the tip of my penis, what do you think it is?" Come on, use some common sense. The first case is obvious; go to the ER. The second case is obvious, go to a doctor. But no, those people don't do that, they ask us rude imbeciles here on Yahoo Answers.
Now, I have to say that I will sometimes be rude to those who ask stupid questions. Yes, there are stupid questions. Your teachers told you that there weren't so that your brittle self esteem would not break.
Okay, bring on the thumbs downs!

Y/A reflects real life. Same as there are scum bags out in the real world who love to hurt other people's feelings...So they are here as well.
We even have some on here that wouldn't say "Boo" to a goose in the real world...but they can find the courage from behind their computers to say all manner of rude things..
I like the way you deal with them though...lmao
