There are jails all over the world full of people who knew the consequences of there actions, if they were caught.
Did it stop any of them? No. They still carried out the crime and got caught.
People seem to think, "It won't happen to me."
We don't know how often any of the Bali 9 had done this trip, as mules, before. They may have been travelling back and forth for some time and each time avoid arrest.
John Howard and his government? -
I'm only going to say I'll be letting my feelings known, when I vote, on the 24th November.
Then, we'll all see what the Australian public really feel about John Howard and his government.
I believe the Industrial Relations (IR) Laws and our involvement in the Iraq War and in Afghanistan will hang him.
The threat of Peter Costollo as the next Prime Minister has a lot of voters worried, too.

Why do you think the Bali 9 did what they did if they knew the consequences?
-They all knew the consequences, they just chose not to think about them. At the airport in Bali there are signs and warnings galore about how harsh they are on drugs and it is common knowledge when you travel to Indo dont mess with drugs. Or you can face very harsh penalties. It's a very corrupt place over there, police take bribes like lunch.
1. Why do you think they would put themselves in that kind of situation?
- Because they were naive, or plain dumb, or money hungry. Different members of the 9 had differing reasons i would imagine.
2. How do Australians feel about John Howard? (I am not an Australian so don't know much about him and his government)
- John Howard is over the hill. He is about as fresh and innovative as a 10 year old pair of dunlop volleys. It's time to go johnny. He really demonstrated how much of a puppet of George Bush's he is when he followed the war on terror joke. Sending our troops over was stupid, now every mad extremist muslim nutter wants revenge on our very peaceful way of life. Our hospitals are a joke, schools are a joke, roads and public transport is pathetic. There needs to be a change and fast. John Howard is a little rodent coward.

People committing crimes do not expect to be caught and most are not. The amount of heroin being smuggled by the Bali 9 would have supplied Sydney's needs for three days. Obviously there is an enormous amount coming in successfully, much of it being carried by mules such as the Bali 9. Australians have been hanged in Malaysia and Singapore for drug smuggling but the easy money and low risk makes it very tempting.
You will find out what Australians think of Howard on November 24 when he will be thrown out of office at the election.

People that commit crimes do not think about getting caught - if they did they wouldn't do it in the first place. Usually poverty aids people in committing crimes, the promise of earning a quick dollar.
As for Johnny , people will see that he wasn't that bad after they live with a Labour Governemt. I have lived under a Labour Government for many years and have seen my Country destroyed by them, this being the main reason for me leaving there to migrate to Australia. When everything goes wrong, they just blame the previous Government, wait and see!

You asked this question in a section regarding travel to Australia...?
Perhaps it would have been more suited in a Politics section on Answers?
