isn't it the children's duty to take care of their parents, so why did Jesus entrust Mary to other people, like John, rather than to His own brothers?

Vicarius Christi, your answer makes sense.

to whoever find this question annoying obviously doesn't want to think and ponder what's wrong with their beliefs, showing deep insecurity.

cathy_rose2000, it's not mentioned in the Bible that Jesus' brothers are married, so to say that the reason why Jesus didn't entrust Mary to them for that reason is just an example of forcing the Bible to fit in your beliefs.

nothing in the Bible said that Jesus' brothers were unbelievers, so where did you get that idea?

Well now that's a tricky question, that fact that we think of brothers coming from the same parent/s. Jesus had no brothers in that sense because Jesus was the "Son of Man." And if memory serves me right, those who recognize HIM, HE will recognize before GOD. So as his desciples recognized HIM as the Savior, HE recognized them as brothers.

Jesus did have brothers and sisters and the scriptures make that plain. The idea that he didn't is merely spread to promote the idea that Mary was a PERPETUAL virgin. I mean, think about it. Would Joseph marry a woman he couldn't have children with? Certainly not in that age.

Anyway, what kind of brothers did he have? At the time, they were unbelievers. not only that, they thought Jesus had lost his mind. He left Mary in John's care because he could be able to look out for her both spiritually and materially.
==========
Scriptural backup:

That Mary was not "ever virgin": Matthew 13:55,56 - "is this not the carpenter's son? Is no his mother called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And his sisters are they not all with us?"

That Jesus' brothers thought he was out of his mind: Mark 3:21 - "but when his relatives heard about it, they went out to lay hold of him, for they were saying 'He has gone out of his mind'". Clearly if they thought he was out of his mind, they were not believing what he had to say.

If I remember correctly, Jesus taught that ALL men were HIS brothers and that ALL women were HIS mother. He also taught us to pray to GOD in a very personal way by teaching us The Lord's Prayer which sounds somewhat formal in the King James Version where we begin the prayer with "Our Father". While I cannot remember where I learned it from, I was taught that the actual term that Jesus used in HIS native language was very similar to the way that a typical American child might refer to his/her father as "Daddy".

I hope that this helps and that it will inspire you to study further!

Thank You and Bless You!!

Jesus had brothers and sisters they are mentioned a few times in the gospels and in other places of New Testament. If half brothers, sons of a previous marriage of Joseph; or sons of Joseph and Mary is matter of great debate between catholics and the rest of christians. Nevertheless, even if they were halfbrothers only, as jews respectfull of the Law they would take care of Mary, in respect of the memory of their father Joseph.

However, they were not followers of Jesus at the time of Jesus death. For the jews, their family members who followed Christ were considered dead. Verify at the Acts of the Apostles, there were a lot of widows that the church had to take care of because their jew sons would not take care of them because the widows were christians.

That's why Jesus entrusted John with the care of His mother, He can not trust at that time of their own brothers (or half brothers).

Remember what Jesus said in Mattew 19:29:
And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

That was a reality to all jews accepting Jesus in that time (and also to many people in actual time), they lose their families because their family rejected them due to their faith in Jesus.
Hope this helps.

Some of the brothers of Jesus joined the church later, James for example.
EDIT:
Check John 7: 1-5 to see the reference for the unbelieving Jesus' brothers during His life and ministry.

Being married did not cancel the responsibility of the sons to honor (and take care) of their ederly father or mother. How could they comply with the 4th commandment "Honor father and mother" if they did not provided for their needs? Even if they were half-brothers, how they could honor Joseph's memory by not taking care of his wife? Only if they consider her dead due to her faith in Jesus as the Messiah, as Son of God.

More the likely all his brother were married as would have been the case because Jesus would have been the oldest and because of custom would have been able to go out and minster like he did until all the members of his family were taken care of...i.e. all of them married.

John was a person that Jesus trusted and was not married so it would have been acceptable for him to take care of Mary..

Because He had no brothers nor did the blessed mother have other children besides Jesus.

Do you think his brother bragged at work....yup my brother is the son of god. Don't tell me i didn't get promoted!

Or do you think his brothers said something like -
Oh crap Jesus is at it again; telling everyone he is the son of god. I hope he doesn't come over for passover this year because he doesn't have a job and wont leave. His damn friends always come with him too and they will want handouts. One year he brought water that was died red. He claimed he magically made water into wine and that is why it was so watery. His buddies believed it but they where plastered already.

Jesus had brothers. John was at the cross with Mary, so he entrusted her safekeeping to him. What's so difficult to understand.

Maybe his brothers were people like you, spending their whole days trying to annoy people. If so, he made a wise choice.
