of course its normal. for example, I miss someone so much right now, but all I am looking forward to doing is seeing that person on Friday. don't think about what you can't have, think about what you can!
if this is someone who has possibly passed away, I don't think that person would want you to be sad for them.

especially true when that person is someone you cannot meet everyday, and you only keep in touch through internet (or phone).
I think it's a completely normal feeling, as it happens to me too. I did fell for someone whom we don't meet each other in our daily life. We just chat online, and I miss all the time.
It's something that's hard to handle... never got any easier

when they're on a trip? maybe a bit obsessive - tell yourself they're coming back, and try to go about your daily business
when a long-term relationship with them ended? somewhat normal, for a certain amount of time, though you'll need to break out of that too...
