We live in the UK and we have a problem with cat fleas we have tried bob martins stuff (powder and spray) and the spot on stuff that you put on the back of your cats neck. He also has a flea collar but we are still being attacked by fleas apart from getting rid of the cat (only joking I would not get rid of him) what other product could people recommend please. Thanks for any help.

Please PLEASE don't use Bob Martin! This is an exceptionally dangerous product for cats - even if your cats have been lucky enough to escape harm, don't support this rotten company by buying their products. I work in a surgery in Kent, and am so very sick of seeing animals come in that are seizuring/dead after application of Bob Martin. Also sick of seeing the lucky ones that escaped harm, but still have live fleas on them. It's incredible these products are allowed to be sold.

Furthermore, no flea collars work, not even the veterinary ones like Vetkem. The premise is flawed - the chemical on them doesn't spread through the skin, so fleas are only kept away from the neck area - so they just hide elsewhere on the body! Flea collars also cause reactions, usually a ring of hair loss round the neck - take the collar off.

Please get a proper flea treatment from a vets - Frontline, Advantage, Stronghold and Advocate are all very effective - and very safe.

First off the spot on stuff (only front line or stronghold) will rid your cat of any fleas and will also kill any fleas that jump onto your cat. You do have to reapply the treatment every month to stop the flea population getting out of hand. Don't waste your money on flea treatment brought from petshops, they rarely work only use the vet strength stuff.
It sounds like you are infested with fleas (ie they are living in carpets rugs and soft furnishings) You will have to hoover everywhere everyday and use a vet strength powder or spray. Failing that call an exterminator in to spray everything for you.
Good luck, it's not nice being infested but it is quite easily sorted if you use the right stuff

Non- vet products rarely work. I must have used 6 large canisters of flea powder on an infected carpet, didn't make a difference! What worked is proper vet spot- on drops (we were given Stronghold), got rid of the fleas on the cat within 2 days and took care of the ones in the carpet!
I was told by the Vet that flea collars don 't work.
Spot-on drops are not expensive, they'll probably work out cheaper than all the stuff you have gotten so far.

Frontline Combo (applied every month) and Virbac Indorex spray for the house. Sorted our "little problem" out completely (no further reinfestation) after 3 months. Expensive (total cost around £50) and only available from the vet. Do not skimp on the treatment of your house - this is very important - read and follow instructions. Think about all the places your cat lies. Read up on the life cycle of the flea to help you understand the process. Please treat your cat soon - they can actually become very ill if the infestation is bad. Oh, and we also have an electronic flea comb which kills adult fleas, but, more usefully, I think, acts as an early warning signs to collect flea faeces from the coat. How can you tell if they are flea faeces? Wet a white tissue and sprinlkle the combings on to it. If a red colour appears, the dirt is derived from your cat's blood and is probably flea in origin!

my daughter ended up with a massive flea infestation in her home after both her cats got fleas.even though she treated the cats with the drops behind the head she still had millions of fleas hopping round the house and biting anything that moved mainly herself and her husband.

i did some research and came across a website called The Vinegar book.

what you do is to place a saucer or bowlful of vinegar in each room of your house and the fleas are attracted to the smell and when they climb in to the bowl they drown.

i was slightly skeptical at first but then my daughter texted me the next day to tell me that hundreds of fleas were drowned in the vinegar. she carried on on refilling the bowl every day and after two weeks all her fleas were gone.

also to stop the fleas biting yourself mix up a solution of 20 drops of eucalyptus oil to a pint of water in a water
spray bottle and spray your lower legs and trousers to prevent the fleas from biting you as they are repelled by the smell.

also if you are using the bob Martin flea drops dont waste anymore of your money as they only repel the fleas not kill them.

if you are on a benefit of some kind you can get the proper flea drops drom the RSPCA clinic i get mine for only £5 and they give you enough for two months treatment.

any type of vinegar will do as long as you dont mind your house smelling like a chipshop for a couple of weeks it really does work.

good luck.

Cats and dogs will continually pick up new fleas, so you need to keep your pet's treatment up to date. Frontline is superb for this. Once they are in your home then you need to threat the whole house. There will be eggs in your home which keep hatching for months. As others have said a good spray treatment for your house from your vets will do this and continue to kill the fleas as they hatch. I've never found the flea collars to be as good as Frontline.

well the best bet is probablty going to your vets as there flea treatment is alot stronger than bob martins it never worked on my pets. they would try and sell you the spray for the house too that should be about £14 its good stuff though will get rid of them, so that one is up to you but the flea treatment drops from the vets is alot better. frontline i think it is

Don't live in the UK, but I tried all of the flea stuff at the store and nothing worked!k I finally asked the veterinarian's office and they had a super powered room spray. It was quiet pricey but WELL worth it!

You also have to treat your home. There are bug(flea) bombs that you can set off in addition to carpet cleaners that can kill them. If your cat had an infestation, it went further than just on the cat. These are pesky little critters to eliminate.
