Hi there, I have no idea about the excel but I had a hyundai accent (small car as well) I had a 2002 accent for two years (I got it in 2005). I put ALOT of money into ...the transmission had to be rebuilt twice..which sucked...then two struts when bad and all three belts i ended up putting over 4000 dollars into the car...and then two sensors went bad on the transmissions and they told me it'd be 611.00 to fix. The two sensors that went bad were the throttle position sensor and pulse generator sensor..both of which have to do with speed...my car (sitting at a COMPLETE STOP and even PARKED!) would jerk forward...so I couldn't take it anymore!
I just bought a new car in august (2008 toyota corolla). My fiance has a corolla, it's four years old and has NEVER had to be serviced with the exception of oil and breaks!

I agree with poster 1, a new car of course wouldn't require repairs anytime soon, but of course then you have a large car payment for many years. Hyundai hasn't built the Excel in over 7 years, so you are looking at an older car that will require some repairs.
Now, the amount of service required is going to depend on the cars current condition and how many miles you plan on driving per year. The more you drive the more standard maintainenance your car will need.
I highly recommend you have any used car you plan to purchase throughly inspected by an independent mechanic prior to purchase so that you know what the issues are and what may go wrong in the future along with the cost of repairs.
When buying an older used car you have to balance the cost of repairs with the cost of owning a newer car. As poster 1 spent $4000 over 2 years on repairs, that is still less then the monthly payments on her new Corolla, but of course I too would rather drive a new Corolla then old Excel if I can afford it.

your scheduled maint. costs vary per year now remember that is scheduled maint. You would need to take it in every three months for the following:
NOTE: Hyundai factory warranty complete (almost, read the fine print) for the first five years or 60k whichever comes first...this transfers to anyone, the ten year 100k applies to original owner only......
3 month service- oil change appx. 30.00
7500- appx. 90.00
11250- 30.00- oil change
15k or one year- appx. 200.00
18250- 30.00- oil change
22,500- appx. 90.00
26,250 appx. 30.00- oil change
30k or two years appx. 420.00
than starts over again
I agree with the two previous posters****
