Islam prohibits portraying a human being for the simple reason that as it often happens, when even an ordinary person dies his family members starts presenting flowers, AGARBATTI/ DHOOPP, a sort of worshipping on his portrait.
Now if a great person like Mohammad dies, his followers are certain to start worshipping him by raising a statue/ idol or his portrait.
This is forbidden in Islam to worship any one including prophet Mohammad besides Allah.
This was an early experience from the Christians who raised the idols and portaraits & idols of Jesu, Marry & other saints and started worshipping keeping aside the GOD.
Can you imagin that if there were portraits of Mohammad, Muslims won't have worshipped them ?
The most beloved person on earth is Mohammad, for the Muslims and portraying him would have led the Muslims to worship him. There is no doubt about that.
Hence to prevent from the SHIRK, Islam prohibited portrayal of Mohammad or any human for that matter.

Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 23 :: Hadith 425
Narrated 'Aisha:
When the Prophet became ill, some of his wives talked about a church which they had seen in Ethiopia and it was called Mariya. Um Salma and Um Habiba had been to Ethiopia, and both of them narrated its (the Church's) beauty and the pictures it contained. The Prophet raised his head and said, "Those are the people who, whenever a pious man dies amongst them, make a place of worship at his grave and then they make those pictures in it. Those are the worst creatures in the Sight of Allah."
The Only one who we should worship is Allah(SWT)
Also, there are hadiths which say Angels will not go into a house where there are pictures.. Allah(SWT) is the only creator.

On this Particular Issue,Muslims are following Jews' Tradition in banning pictures,icons,......
My teacher of History who was a Muslim,told me that in one of the Turkish Museums,there is a picture of Muhammad drawn by unknown painter,according to the descriptions of Muhammad,mentioned by his companions and reached us in Islamic books.Visitors are not allowed to photo it lest fuss would be stirred by fundamental muslims.
