Go to a homeless shelter, and one of those kitchen places that serves food to the needy. also you can create progarms where people donate clothes and stuff, and you can set up a pick up system where you go and pick up clothes people dont have the time to drop off.

Habitat for Humanity does amazing work all over the country, building houses for people who would otherwise be unable to own a house, and also teaching resposibility and that when you receive you must also give back.
A lot depends on how much you are able to put up with hardship. Volunteering at a homeless shelter or animal humane society can be very rewarding, but also very difficult as you have to deal with some very harsh realities. 'Easier' charity work would be volunteering at a food bank or meals on wheels program, or visiting senior citizens. Other places like libraries also need volunteers.

Honeslty? Call your local volunteer center - they've got opportunity upon opportunity, and will help you find exactly the right one for you, based on your interests, talent and time.
If you don't have a volunteer center in your area, check with your local United Way, or hop on line to 1-800volunteer.org, volunteermatch, the Points of Light Foundation/Hands On Network, The Corporation for National Community Service - you'll be surprised at what's available in your hometown!

I suggest you do volunteering that is interesting and appropriate to YOU. What kind of activities do you like to do? What do you NOT like to do? What kind of causes are important to you? Answer these questions, and then start looking for organizations to assist. VolunteerMatch.org and Idealist.org are excellent places to look. If you don't see any opportunities there after looking for a few days, make a list of organizations that look interesting to you and contact them -- ask what volunteering opportunities they have and if you could come on site to learn more.
What I do as a volunteer many not be interesting to you - you have to find your own path, your own activities, your own causes.
Finding the right volunteering opportunity is like finding the right date or the right job -- you have to meet a lot of people before you find the right experience for you.

why don't you do something you like that is needed in your community where you live.. there must be something...
I do collect clothes and books and school fees for needy children... sometimes we buy mattresses and sweaters for orphans.. etc.. there is something to do everywhere. I just like kids and I think this the area that needs help inour region. lack of school, clothes, food and mattresses is a few of the things they miss. we started slowly, 22-23 girls and we got goin and have donate, clothes, food, slippers, mattresses, so far... fidn the area that interest you first...if you have it in your heart, you will find a way to do what you want and what will help someone less fortunate...

Contact a local nursing home. Find out if anyone there has no family or few visitors. Spend some time talking to them.
