This "guidance" comes from the Old Testament . People were told it was a sin ( meaning fear god's punishment ) . The reason the leaders told the uneducated masses this was because the pigs consumed too much of the natural resourses compared to cattle , chickens , etc .
It is sort of like : would more Christians stop using their car for very short trips if you explained pollution and global warming , or would more give up the driving if the Pope declared it to be a mortal sin based on the Bible . I'm sure even today in many societies, that people will fear the god more than they will respect the science . That's why all those 'sins' are in the Bible . Things like no scallops or pork , women can't wear two different types of cloth at the same time , no recreational sex , etc .

There are four categories of food Muslims don't eat:
a. Pork
b. Animals or birds which are dead or killed without in the
name of God.
c. Liquid flowing blood.
d. Any addicting drug which can harm normal function of
human brain.
Except these four categories people can eat anything if that is good, eatable and not harmful.
Muslims don't eat pork because it is forbidden by God.

Muslim's eat any food which they like to eat that is Halal. Meaning it is in the standards of dietary laws. McDonald's and Subway in the USA are not halal sources of food for Muslims. Also, if you go to a restaurant which serves pork there is no way of telling if it is cooked along with the pork or other foods. You do not know if the person who has handled the pork has washed their hands in a proper way to prepare your food. You do not know if the animal was slaughtered in an halal way. There are many places in the USA where you can find Halal or Kosher food. All Kosher food is Halal for Muslims, all Halal food is not Kosher for Jews..
Typical foods where I live are chicken, beef, lamb, goat, Hummus, falafel, egg plant, cauliflower, Mansaf, flat bread, tons of olive oil, cheese, milk, we have McDonalds(halal), Burger King, other resturants.....

Who's been saying that?Long time ago,The Jews and Christians are also forbidden from eating pork. Here is a quote from the Old Testament to that effect: "And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase." Deuteronomy 14:8
Many Christians believe that this verse was directed only at the Jews. But Jesus himself says during the Sermon on the Mount; "Think not that I am come to destroy the Law, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill." Some Christians say that, after a vision by St. Peter, God cleansed all animals and made them fit and lawful for human consumption. If ALL animals are cleansed by Peter's vision, this includes dogs, cats, vultures, and rats: but you just don't see people getting excited about a cat-meat sandwich like they do over barbecued pork or bacon. Others say that it was Paul who rescinded the law forbidding pork to humans, in order to appease the Romans, who enjoyed the taste of pig-meat. Many excuses have been given, but none are very sound.
Many Far Eastern traditions also discourage the eating of pork. The 3,000 year old Confucian Book of Rites says, "Agentleman does not eat the flesh of pigs and dogs." Although many Chinese are avid eaters of pork today, physicians of ancient China recognized pork-eating as the root of many human ailments. Buddhists, Jains and Hindus usually avoid eating any kind of meat. You can refer to below link to get more information.

Hi Linda,
Muslims can eat beef, lamb, chicken & fish. Specific dishes would vary according to the country they reside in.
The Quran bans the eating of pork as the pig is considered an impure animal (similar to the Jews & kashrut law).

Pig's bodies incorporate many pollutants, worms and latent ailments. whether a number of those infestations are harbored in different animals, present day veterinarians say that pigs are much greater predisposed to those ailments than different animals. this may be via fact pigs opt for to scavenge and could consume any sort of food, such as ineffective bugs, worms, rotting carcasses, excreta (consisting of their very own), rubbish, and different pigs. The Jews and Christians are additionally forbidden from ingesting beef. right it is a quote from the old testomony to that effect: "And the swine, via fact it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth no longer the cud, that's unclean unto you: ye shall no longer consume of their flesh, nor touch their ineffective carcase In folklore words, ingesting the beef of the pig is declared to make a contribution to loss of morality and shame, plus greed for wealth, laziness, indulgence, dirtiness and gluttony. We insult a man or woman by way of calling her or him a "Pig" whilst they show those features

Middle-easterners have a paranoid fear of tapeworm which stems back two millenia.....
Typically... human tapeworms are aquired from eating the flesh of pigs. Thing is, while this used to be moderately common, it is all but unheard of these days in first-world countries..... yet still they fear it as their holy books tell them to.
What they DO eat? .... Weird stuff. Spicy food, I imagine.
