The Oresound Link was opened on 1 July 2000. The opening was at the same time the end to four and a half years of construction and building work, which was carried out within the time schedule and financial budget framework as planned.
Map of Oresound link The Oresound Link was established to create improved transport connections between Sweden and Denmark, and thereby expand the cultural and economic co-operation in the Oresound Region. The agreement on the establishment of the fixed link between Denmark and Sweden was concluded between the governments of the two countries in March 1991. The agreement stated that the Oresound Link (the coast-to-coast facility) was to be constructed as a combined road and railway connection between Kastrup and Limhamn. Under the agreement, the two countries accepted the obligation each to construct the necessary railway and road connections from the Oresound Link to the existing railway and road net-works.
The Oresound Link Consortium has been established and is regulated pursuant to a special agreement between the two governments. Each country owns 50 per cent of the Oresound Link Consortium, and the ownership is established by each of the two land companies, Oresound A/S and SVEDAB, having in-jected DKK 25 million in the Oresound Link Consortium. With the design and construction completed, the Oresound Link Consortium now manages the operation of the16 kilometre coast-to-coast connection between Denmark and Sweden, while Oresound A/S and Svensk-Danska Broförbindelsen SVEDAB AB each manage the operation of the land facilities in Denmark and Sweden. Oresound A/S and SVEDAB AB are 100 per cent owned by the Danish and the Swedish government, respectively.
