I have a Hitachi 43' HDTV monitor that I got 6 years ago,
which doesn't have HDMI connections. Can I hook up my
HD cable box (w/ HDMI out) to a receiver (w/ HDMI in & out)
and get a picture on the tv?

It's a Sony 6.1 home theater receiver,
model STR-DG 710. The specs say
it does have video upconversion at
circuitcity.com. I get the sound fine, but
no video on any on the tv inputs.

I almost forgot; the tv is a Hitachi HD
monitor 43UWX10B, bought in 2001.
I've got a lot of components & am trying to utilize every connection possible.
Thanks

Generally no.

Most receivers that do conversion take analog inputs and spit them out the HDMI port.

HDMI is about content protection. If someone made a box that took HDMI in, then converted it to un-protected analog, it would allow pirates to make high def copies.

Use component cables for your CATV box. You are not loosing any quality other than the cables are a bit more expensive. (This is what I am using).

Make sure to buy cables rated for HD video signals (90-100 Mhz bandwidth). BlueJeans is a good place for great cables at less-than-retail price.

If your receiver does video conversion then maybe yes, but you provided no model number to be sure. Include for TV and box as well.

It sounds like you want the receiver to down convert a HDMI signal to the appropriate component signal. Your model does not do this. HDMI operates outside of the analog transports. There are component video switchers out there.
