I am planning on driving from Perth to Canberra in Dec. I would like to know the quickest route to travel, including any recommended stops.

If you go to the RACQ Trip Planner it will give detailed turn by turn directions from one city to the other.
http://www.racq.com.au/cps/rde/xchg/racq_cms_production/hs.xsl/travel_trip_planner_ENA_HTML.htm

It also has things to see and do, places to stay etc along the way.

Total driving time (no stops included) is:
43:49 hours

Total distance is:
3724.83 kms

I hope you have a good and safe trip.
I must say I don't envy you, it's a long, long way and hot.

Perth - Kalgoorlie - Norseman - Ceduna - Port Augusta - Adelaide - Tailem Bend - Ouyen - Piangil - Balranald - Wagga Wagga - Yass - Canberra is the most straightforward route. Where you stop depends on how far you want to travel each day. The fewest stops are between Norseman and Ceduna. Fill up when you see a service station, the next will be a ong way ahead. Check out the Head of the Bight on the way across, you might see some southern right whales.

You should go through Highway 94 and join with highway 1. Cross the WA-SA border. Go past Port Augusta. Then turn left to Clare Highway (B64, I think there are signs to Crystal Brook). Turn right at Main North Road and after 2km turn left to stay on B64. After 10km turn left to B80 (Clare-Peterborough Road). When you get to Spalding continue on Government Road (Don't turn right to continue on B80). After 30km turn right to Barrier Highway and after 6km turn left to Ludgvan Street. After 80km turn left to Morgan Renmark Road. After 90km turn left to Sturt Highway. Drive straight for 750km. Take the ramp onto Hume Hwy northbound. After 139km turn right to Barton Highway entering ACT. You're there!

The drive is 45 hours.

P.S. From Crystal Brook to Sturt HWY it is the B64. It is a very useful shortcut.
