basically it's time for the guys to have a break from combat and let them spend time with their families...where it differs from regular leave is that the military will pay to fly your hubby back to the base he's stationed at from the war zone and they'll fly him back to the war zone...now if you have moved home then you are responsible to get him from his duty station to where you're at and back...so he doesn't miss his flight...depending on how long hubby is deployed for he could have 2-3 weeks of r&r...
also to the idiot claiming that in the army that R&R stand for "riot and rape"...i've been an army wife for 15yrs and have never heard it called that...and people like you are why our military personal get bad press...grow up!

Rest and Relaxation (R&R) Leave is a program designed to get Soldiers out of a combat zone and "de-stress". Yes the leave is chargeable, just as ordinary leave. However, in this high deployment time frame Soldiers have an opportunity to use something called Post Deployment and Mobilization Respite Absence (PDMRA). It is a difficult program to understand, but basically allows for any individual deployed over 12 months within a 36 month period to get at least one non-chargeable day of leave for every additional month over 12. So depending on how long your husband has been deployed in the last 36 months some of his leave might not be charged.
The one advantage to R&R Leave versus normal leave is that the government will pay to fly your husband to his leave destination. During normal leave, the traveller is responsible for transportation costs to and from the duty station.
If your husband is on an extended deployment (over 12 months long) then the R&R process will allow for him to take 18 days instead of the standard 15 days.

R&R,Mid Tour, whatever you want to call it. is basically 2 weeks of NON chargeable leave that begins when the SM arrives home( No longer does the clock start the minute they arrive on US soil) from a a location such as Korea or the Sandbox..typically it is given only to people on extended deployments or Remote Tours lasting at least 12 months.
they TRY and schedule it half way between, but in many cases that just doesn't happen, as the unit must remain manned at a certain level. It can and will be changed and denied.
For instance, my cousin was scheduled for his in June of this past year. It was moved up earlier because his mother became very ill( and did indeed die while he was home). Impending fathers may try and schedule theirs for the approximate delivery date.
in SOME Cases, too, they can be given Local R&R..they are not permitted to come home, but they do get out of the combat zone and get to hang out in Bahrain or even Germany for a few days.

Normal leave and R & R are similar but not quite the same.
I class normal leave as when hubby is home and it is taken as days off his annual entitlement ( About 30 ish days per year).
R & R (Rest and Relaxation) tends to be when they have been on deployment /detachment somewhere and they are being given two weeks off in the middle of it.
Mostly this does not come off their annual entitlement but a perk because they are in a stressful situation away from their loved ones.
I hope this clarifys it for you.

I'd really like to stress that R&R is NOT leave and won't be charged against his leave balance. But he has to be sure that it really IS R&R he is getting and not calling it that by mistake.
Again... R&R is NOT leave. Otherwise most everyone is correct... just a bonus time off.

R&R is rest and recreation, some you need before you crack up from being in a war zone too long.
