Maybe because the results of our 'mistakes' show up pretty fast and make us rue the day...
'Sins', on the other hand are subjective to different cultures/religions/societies, and may not have immediate repercussions. Not everyone is bothered with what happens to them in the afterlife (if they believe in one). Most of the sins give temporary pleasure too.

It depends on the person that thinks that a Mistake is a Sin, or vice-versa, I think that sometimes we make mistakes, and are sorry for them, but a Sin is something bad that sometimes we refrain from commiting it.

Not making mistakes is efficiency in our performance (what ever we do) in this life.
Committing sins cause us punishment on the Day of Judgment.
Those who don't believe in Day of Judgment or the punishment in hell fire do not have fear of God on committing sins.
To be a person of high moral character, and responsiblity in acknowledging and accepting the rights and duties of husband and wife can be learned and strongly believed only in belief in a religion and its teachings. Without strong belief on a religion people can not be committed to be of high moral character with sense of duty to others that must be done.

Because mistakes are things we observe for ourselves as inappropriate actions causing pain or loss. They are therefor convincing, and we can learn from them and correct them. "Sins" are things externally specified, and some are even simply normal human behavior, inappropriate or not. "Original sin" is the most vile imposition of all, I reckon. It promotes guilt without even personal engagement, thereby creating a string for others to yank for their own purposes.

My reason would be that I believe in mistakes. I don't believe in sin.
