I had sent my son in his room to put his pajamas on. It seemed to be taking an extra long time, so I went to check on him. When I walked in the room he was completely naked, and I think he was touching himself. Is this normal for a kid his age to do? I didn't say anything to him about it, but it kind of made me nervous.

Yep, it's totally normal. I'm actually surprised you haven't seen him do it sooner!

I would just make sure that he knows when/where he is appropriate to do this kind of thing... Like make sure he knows its not ok to do it at wal mart or something

Boy Touching Himself

I can remember masturbating from as early as 8 years old. I don't know how many other kids did, but the more time i spend on here, the more i see that lots of kids 'play doctor' etc. If you do find out that he is doing anything, then don't tell him off, you'll just give him all sorts of problems in his head. Instead, maybe he would benefit from some sort of information about things. Being so young, maybe explain the differences between boys and girls, and tell him that these places are private, and he shouldn't share his places with any one, and shouldn't try to share anyone else's places. But avoid making him feel shamed. Kids are just curious, and he probably has no idea why it might feel good to play with himself.

Yes it is very normal for a child to explore their own bodies . What you need to point out to your child is that its okay to touch yourself but only when you are in your bedroom alone, never in front of people. At this age it isn't a sexual thing. It probably does feel good but they don't realise why or how. Next time knock or make a noise before going to his room and continue to NOT make a fuss over it.

Is he your only child? I don't mean to make light of it but, ah he is a male. I have been married 15yrs and have a 17yr old son and neither one of them can keep their hands off their privates. My son went from taking 14 sec. showers without even looking at the soap to 57 min. showers and I can't keep him away from any bar, jar, can, or tub of soap. He is fine. Just don't let it make him raw. Talk to him or let his Dad. Just make sure you don't tell him it will fall off, because my son was about that age and he walked in on me in the bathroom, dropped his jaw, pointed at me and screamed, "Mama, you played with yours and it fell off!". ;-P I am not even going into it about my old man!

Perfectly normal yes - self discovery starts very early. I wouldn't worry too much about saying anything to him at this stage - he probably won't understand why he's doing it himself anyway.

Don't wory about your son. He is developing and is curious with what his body is doing. Little kids learn [mainly] by touch and taste. He is just exploring his body, its new to him! And hes too young to know what "playing with yourslef" is! I'm sure this is just a stage, so don't worry about it. But, mind you, if it continues, you should talk to him about it [lightly].

Totally normal..

Besides..apparently males tend to start being curious way before females because they actually handle their..wankers on a daily basis to urinate and it's easier to access than a girl's.

Would you rather he touched someone ELSE??! He sounds like a pretty normal kid to me- & he's only 6 for heaven's sake... It's when He's 14 & he's NOT doing that- that you should start worrying!!! :)

Yeah its normal. My little bro does that sometimes. Just cus hes touching himself doesnt mean hes masturbating or anything of sexual nature, hes probably just getting familiar with his body.
