I love my crockpot, but I don't really follow a recipe when I use it. Basic rule of thumb is to put the meat in the bottom and then the vegetables that take longer to cook (like potatoes) and then other vegetables if you want. Depending on the kind of meat, I usually add some water to the bottom (not much). Throw some spices in and pop the lid on. Set the timer and bob's your uncle.
As for meats, I tend to use the tougher cuts of meat that cost less. They come out very tender in the crockpot. You can use just about any kind of meat. It's also great for making tomato sauce.

toss in the meat and onions, (save the taters for later so they dont get mushy, but them in about half way thru toss in some liquid turn it on and let it go,
Nothing is complicated in a crockpot.
For pot roast or bbq beef.
sear the meat on all sides in a hot skillet.
for pot roast, I like to use onion soup mix with enough water to cover the roast and turn onto low for 4-6 hours and high for 1 hour. I use the juices to make gravy for some mashed taters.
For bbq beef. prepare the meat the same. cover with bbq sauce. (I like to water mine down a little) cook for the same amount of time on low. remove the roast and shred the meat with a fork. I replace the runny bbq sauce with fresh and put the meat back in on high for 30 min to an hour.
bbq chicken
toss in chicken and sauce and simply turn on pot on low for about 5 hours.
Go to any recipe site and you should find a "cooking method" section. you can do anything from a main course to desserts. One of the true turn it on and forget wonderful devices ever!

yes.
I put whatever I want for my stew, or pot roast in the slow cooker, without cooking it first.
I've made chicken soup using frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts, chicken bouillion, and frozen veggies and it comes out great.
