I made a "party" for my folks - had a bunch of people get together to celebrate for them at a restaurant & flowers, cake, photos & the whole shebang. My Mom & Dad never forgot it. I did the same thing for their 40th. I gave them presents like engraved clocks & stuff like that (only child)
My Dad died 6 months before their big 50th anniversary, so I was always real glad that I had made a big fuss over them, yanno?

The vacation idea is very nice. i know being the holiday time this might be out of the question. Also if you are an only child. How about a cruise. For my Aunt and Uncle's 50 anv. Their children gave them a cruise. They didn't want to go alone so some of their brothers and sisters went with them. All paying their own way. My parents went and loved it.
Another idea is have their family and friends send you old pictures of them. Along with letters or poems from the heart and make a scrap book and give it to them. If you are having a party. Read 3 or for of the poems or letters. Let people know that you might read them. So if they don't want it read out loud. They can tell you ahead of time. This is a gift they can keep for a life time. Unlike a trip that ends after a few days

I definitely think that the vacation is a good idea and the "get together" that someone else had mentioned.
However, for my parent's 35th anniversary, I got together about 100 pics or so from childhood of my bother and I and pics of the family. I took them to a videographer and had him put together and awesome slide show to various songs that my parents have enjoyed through the years. If you don't know about the songs, ask them. They'll never know what you're asking them for. Then I had a small party with family and close friends and presented the slide show there and then it was theirs to keep.
They loved it and it's something that they can keep forever.
I think that this would be an awesome idea not to mention alot cheaper than the vacation.
Good luck!

I think a small vacation would be nice. A good chance for them to get away and enjoy some time together. Even just somewhere away from their house and out of town would be cool. Or perhaps a gift certificate to a really nice fancy restaurant that they wouldn't go to otherwise.
You didn't really give any details about their likes or dislikes, otherwise I'd try to get more specific.

I would shout them a weekend away at a resort, somewhere where they would never have gone. Maybe because of the price. Have wine and chocolates ready in the room and have a reservation at the resorts restaurant for them. You cold also shout them a portrait photo, but a classy one. One that does different photos and gives them a chance to dress up.

I think a weekend at a bed and breakfast sounds romantic. You can tell others what your plan is so they can send chocolates, flowers, sexy pj's, tickets for a show in the area where they will be staying. It could turn into a wonderful group gift that your parents will treasure! make sure you send some disposable camera's along so they can record their trip.

Some hot underwhere.
That way they will respect you as an adult. And be more open with advice on interpersonal relationships.
