Plans are not finalized, but my wedding will probably be located at a relative's cabin which will be a minimum drive of 1 1/2 hours for some guests, but a 4 hr drive for more than half of the guests. (by the way, small wedding, about 50 guests).

Do I need to send save the date cards in this situation?

A 4hr drive is just long enough that some of them might opt to stay over night. It couldnt hurt to send out save the dates. I think its a good idea.

Wait until you've finalized the date before sending out save the date cards.

Also, how far out is the wedding? We're working with a wedding planner who's recommendation is not to worry about save the date cards if the majority of our guests are within driving distance but to send out the invitations approximately eight weeks in advance if hotel accommodations were needed. She also recommended that we contact local hotels and see what their reservation policy is and how many rooms they can reasonably hold as well at what their fee would be.

In our case, most of our guests are from out of state (my fiance and I live in Wyoming with both families living in California), our planner recommended sending save the date cards no less than 6 months but preferably 8 to 12 months out (a lot of people have to put in for vacations a year in advance).

Hope this helps! Good luck and congratulations!

If you have a definite date, yes. If you are still unsure about the location, wait until you are definite. It seems like that is your concern, people having to travel and needing to know in advance. Save the date cards are good, I think, in any situation. Then you guests can plan better. Congrats!

I would, and make sure they know the location. Are there any hotels or other relatives nearby that can have the 4 hour drivers sleep over afterward? Or an early afternoon wedding and reception so they can still drive home afterward might be considerate on your part.
Best of luck to you!

I would definitely send save the date cards. Make sure you send a map with your save the date cards. Or at least the address of the place.

Yes I would send save the date cards, if the date is finalized.
The purpose of the save the date cards is not just so people can make travel arrangements but also so they mark it on their calendar ahead of time so they do not make any other plans for that weekend. If you want people to save that special weekend to be there give them enough notice so they can make it happen.

I would definitely do so. My sister didn't and most of the guests forgot! I sent mine out allready. I actually created a catchy one with me and my fiance's picture on it. Something funny that they can post up.

You can go to my friends site below. That is where I did it all.
