Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET)... they only request that you make a donation (which is recommended $20). You just give them a dollar and they don't ask any questions b/c it's a donation. Sometimes I pay $20 and other times I pay $2, depends on how I feel. Outside of that, Brooklyn Bridge, Battery Park for Statute of Liberty, Central Park, Empire State Building, Times Square, walk down Canal St. if you dare, and go see the Bull on Wall St with the really big (insert your favorite noun). They are all FREE!

Visit Central Park. While I was there, there were free concerts. There is a hostel on like 98th Street near the park. They blocked off the street and neighbors brought out chairs and tables to have a block party. There was music, food, and drinks. It is in Spanish Harlem though, so some people might feel nervous. Just act like you belong.
Take the Staten Island ferry. Visit Rockefeller Center and Time Square. Get discount tickets to off off Broadway plays.

Hop on the Staten Island Ferry. Go down to South Ferry (#1) to the ferry terminal and ride to Staten Island and back for free. Excellent views of Manhattan and the Statue Of Liberty.
