Yes.

Staphylococcus is a species of bacteria which can cause infections in many parts of the body - not just skin.

The best known bug of this species is the dreaded "Golden Staph" or Staphylococcus aureus. Particularly nasty is the MRSA or Multiply Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus which is resistant to many of the usual antibiotics used to combat this bacterium.

Most commonly Staph infections begin with a skin wound because Staph is frequently found on our skin in normal circumstances.

However, Staph can also colonise our nose and throat and can be found in the female vagina - leading to Toxic Shock Syndrome, particularly in the context of tampons that have been left in place for too long.

Other non-skin sources of Staph infection can be following dental work
mastitis (female breast - particularly in breast feeding mothers)
pneumonia (lungs)
sinusitis (sinuses of the face)
endocarditis (heart valves)
osteomyelitis (bones)
