The six months is probably her active duty time that is required for her to complete her basic and school.

It would not be benificial for the goverment to have a 6 month contract. Seeing as trainning would take up most of the 6 months. Look at it from a business stand point. Would a business hire and train a person spending all of the money on doing so only to have the person leave (knowingly) a month after completing this.

She will have to serve 4 years reserve and 4 inactive reserve

It sounds like your friend will be active duty for 6 months while they complete basic training and their training for their job. After that they will be in the reserves and do their 1 weekend a month, 2 weeks a year deal. Their contract is probably 4 years of reserves and 4 years of inactive reserves total.

When a person enlists in any of the armed services they have a total commitment of 8 years of service. How you serve those eight years depends upon your contract. When I enlisted it was for four years active duty and four years reserve; however, I chose later to re-up and serve most of my years on active duty and about 6 months inactive reserve. A soldiers training time counts toward their 8 year commitment. 6 months sound like boot camp and advance training in their military specialty, he or she still must serve 8 years in some fashion.

Here's how it works. Basic Training and technical training for her military job will last 6 months. Once that's over, she'll return home and then be deployable for the rest of the 4 years of her "active reserves" time. She'll do 1 weekend per month, 2 weeks each summer with her reserve unit... and may be deployed to active duty as well.

Reserves are military people trained and held in reserve... meaning, they continue on with their regular life and jobs... and serve on weekends and during the summer.. to maintain their skills and readiness for deployment... but if they are needed in an area of conflict, or to cover for someone who is IN a combat zone, they can get orders for that, too.

So yes.. you'll see her back in her old job and life in six months... but she'll be fulfilling her commitment to the reserves for several years after that... typically a 6 year commitment.

Reserves are usually 6 years, active duty is 4.
She's not going for just 6 months...contracts are much longer than that!!

since you lost the extra words and punctuation, I will be nice.

she enlisted for an eight year total commitment. ALL military contracts are for eight years initially. she will be attending Boot camp and A school for six months. when she returns, she will begin her drill periods.. one weekend a month and two full weeks a year..that is more training and actual working in her job. Then of course is the possibility of being called up to deploy. she will do that a MINIMIM of 4 years. at the end of the four years she can choose to continue drilling as a reservist, or she can go IRR, no more drilling, but she will still need to maintain contact with the reserve unit.

if she she thinks she is going to be gone for six months and then all her commitments are over, she is seriously deluded. did she(or is that you, really) NOT read her contract or listen to her recruiter?

hm, there is no way the reserves will take 6 month contracts. we're short on troops as it is, so i dont see recrutiers going for half a year.

my guess is shes going to BCT and maybe advanced training school for 6 months. after that is the real thing, the 4 years you mentioned up there.

like i said though, thats just a guess. you might want to ask her or her recruiter to make sure

but remember though, recruiters are notorious for... stretching the truth, shall we say?

there is no such think as a 6 month reserve contract, ask your friend for all the details etc. 6 months worth of training or what?

You friend may have been deceived by a recruiter into thinking that she is going in for 6 months, when she is really going to be in for longer. The recruiters are having difficulty meeting their quotas, due to the situation in Iraq.

My fiance signed up for the military in the army, he only signed for 4 years but he is theirs for six. He has been in for 2 yrs so far and can request to be stationed in the states but is currently told to stay in germany for 2 more years...so it seems like sometimes know matter waht you sign up for, it doesn't mean that's what you are getting.
