I think good design combines function, flow and is esthetically pleasing. Also of quality, in the sense that it should be long lasting, sturdy etc,.

Good design is using materials to their best advantage to create an environment that nurtures you. This will always follow the principle that things should serve YOU, not the other way around.
So you want things that work well together but also make a nice statement on their own. You may want a timeless element to the more substantial pieces and play with trends in your accessories. You want your stuff to be functional, easy on the eye, easy to maintain.
You want to consider things like full space and empty space. Good design doesn't try to hard to look good, it just looks good. You want to give yourself room to grow in storage areas, flexibility and versatility in anything that you invest in. A good basket, for example, can hold a package of toilet paper one week, vacuum out the fuzz, and work next week if you need it for books or office supplies.
