If your problem with the regular traps is that you can't set them, there are "better mousetraps" that work on the same principle (a bait released spring that squishes) that are almost fool proof to set, you just have to squeeze the back and the front (business end) opens and automatically latches. I know Victor makes these (they look almost like a plastic binder clip, grey with a big red "V" on the top), and they are available at hardware stores and/or Home Depot for a few bucks. The poodle may get into these too, although I bet having one clamp down on his tongue would prevent any future meddling.
I've seen some live traps (although I can't for the life of me think of where) that are like a square tube with a bend in the middle and a door hinged at the top of one end. When the mouse enters and goes to the other closed end, his weight causes the tube to pivot over it's bend (like a seesaw), lifting the open end which closes the door and traps the mouse inside. Then you just have to figure out what to do with the mouse. (take him across town and release or just submerge the whole tube in water for a while).
Although I've never used them, I've heard that glue traps are very effective too.

To me, the best mouse/rat trap is the Rat Zapper, a battery powered trap that electrocutes the rodent instantly when it touches the bait. It would be hard for a dog to get its paw inside, and he probably wouldn't bother; and if he did, he'd just get a zap, it wouldn't harm him. Regular mouse traps will work if you put them where the dog can't get at them.
Poison is dangerous to the dog and to the neighborhood cats and owls that might eat the poisoned mice.
Also, you need to find out where the mice are getting in, and close the holes.
Or get a cat. The cat will chase any mouse that comes in, and soon they'll stay away.

Use a trap that just catches the mice (Humain trap- not spelt correctly)
You can usually by these in pet stores (box with a flap at one end)
Mice run in, you pick up box and release FAR from your house (several blocks away)
Poodle can't fit in mouse trap, you don't have any dead mice laying around (which can also harm your pets and yourself), are reusable (Mice don't smell death(blood) on them so aren't suspicious).

Don't use mouse traps because your poodle could get caught in them but you could put down humane traps such as
ones that the mouse goes in and hits a trigger that closes the door behind them and you just set them free (far away from your house) (you put chocolate inside to tempt them in)

go to Walmart or other big store and they have those little see thru plastic cubes that are live catch for about five dollars.
Bait it with a bit of peanut butter and put in in the cabinet.
It's similar to this one, but cheaper
