People always ask me and I've been depressed for as long as I can remember. I have things that help me cope, but I don't understand having fun in general. I know this makes no sense, but it finally occurred to me it must still be my depression talking.

I have manic depression myself. honestly feeling "fun" doesn't have to be something big. to me - it's when, even if for a moment, I forget about all my problems. Do you like amusement parks? Try going on a roller coaster - dare yourself with the biggest one in the park - that feeling I get from being up that high, the anticipation -- that's fun to me. Also, try renting a funny movie. I remember the first time I watched "Wedding Crashers" or "40 year old Virgin" -- I LMAO and my depression was the farthest thing from my mind, in those moments. Try for small levels of fun and work your way up to where you can get that feeling on a daily basis! Good luck!

I also have no concept of having fun, taking vacations, or spending money on myself just because. I don't know how it started but I think it is linked to my very insecure and violent up bringing. Just a guess. I actually have to force myself to do something fun. And usually I beat the crap out of myself for having fun. I learned this I am sure from my highly dysfunctional family of origin.
