I think first we have to start with the teaching of healthy eating habits at young ages. If you let a young child have what they want when they want, of course they aren't going to be picking the broccoli. It's either going to be Mcdonalds or some other sort of unhealthy meal. So lack of education in proper nutrition would be one as well as lack of education on the importance of exercise.
Another would be the growing popularity of fast food. Kids like to go to a place where they can eat and get a toy with their food, I know this because that is what I liked when I was a kid. Usually only fast food has toys with their kids meals. Adults like fast food because, being busy, you don't always have time to spend in the kitchen cooking and it is very convenient on your way home from work.
Also, the ever so popular world of computers, video games, and TV. These give you an excuse to sit around all day doing nothing but playing games, surfing the web, and watching TV. I know so many people that do nothing but this, especially those that are not the biggest fan of sports. It seems these things also help keep parents from worrying as much, because their child isn't outside where someone could kidnap them or worry about them being in the road and getting hit by a car, and of course they know where their child is and know they're not getting into trouble.
Figuring out something more interesting than video games that requires being active is a hard one. Not all kids enjoy sports, so coming up with something is the thing. Setting up certain times your child must go play is also a good suggestion, not allowing them to watch tv, get on the computer, or play games until they've played for at least 30 min to an hour. Also teaching them the importance of proper nutrition and exercise would go a long way in their future.
As for adults, most know what is healthy and what isn't, it's the choices that are made that are the problem. I think the best way is keeping up with your calorie intake and glancing at the calories of everything you consume, just to get an idea of what is being eaten. Some like to keep a record of their daily caloric intake, which is fine, but most won't stick to it. This could also help you make better choices and avoiding ones that are high in calories, because some things can suprise you as to how fattening some foods really are (I couldn't believe a fortune cookie was 250 calories). I think having a pedometer could also help, because it gives you a good idea of how much you have actually walked; it also helps to set a daily step goal (where you make yourself walk a certain number of steps a day). I think the recommended steps per day was 10,000. Working exercise into your daily routine is a great way to keep it up, without some kind of routine, usually procrastination sets in and eventually ceasing of the whole thing happens.

Obesity didn't become a problem overnight.
First there was the culture of 'more is better'- which extended to food. So of course, people started eating more than they really needed.
Then came all of the devices that enabled us to play games or get information without getting up- Read computers and computer-like devices.
Then there are places where people have a justifiable fear of going out- no thanks to the criminal element.
As for the kids- They won't like it, but about the best thing you can do for them is take away their video games and computers so they HAVE to actually learn how to PLAY.
The time to do it is now.
I saw something very disturbing some years ago: A small group of girls 10 years old at most who had absolutely no idea how to use their own minds and imaginations. All their make-believe games had to be pre-scripted for them. They had absolutely no idea even how to wash dishes without a dishwasher, and were amazed when I showed them. These were good girls, but they will be helpless when they meet the real world, unless something drastic has happened since I last saw them.
I know all that seems to be way out in the left field so to speak, but there is a point: Kids need to get outside to run and play. And I don't mean in organized leagues either. I mean just plain play.

Obesity will be with us as long as we continue to eat fast foods, both at home and at fast food restaurants. We need to get back to a natural diet filled with fresh fruits and vegetables the way food was intended to be eaten.
As well, kids need exercise and I don't entirely blame children for this tendency to not exercise, parents need to have more time to enjoy some activities with the kids to encourage children to be outside and active.

too plenty subtle meals, quickly meals, 'supersizing', and sendentary existence. a lot of people do no longer cook dinner and ingesting out or quickly meals are infamous for weight benefit. ingredient administration is unheard off. infants are sitting in front of computers, x-containers, and so on and not shifting. In my childs college device, recess is eradicated after 5th grade. the middle schoolers and severe schoolers consume lunch and as we communicate return to class. No time for a %. up activity of any style of ball. If mothers and dads do no longer inspire workout, it does not happen. Diabletes is rampant and could grow to be greater so interior the destiny.

By eating processed foods and by being less mobile.
Ideally getting kids to move and eat basically fruits and vegetables ( Plant foods!); and some protein from dairy.
Would be a grand solution.
But often kids imitate parents....so if parents eat healthy and exercise........ditto.
