The military is working on guns that emit disabling heat rays for non-toxic knock downs. Others are working on handguns that respond only to biometric facts about the owner (like their thumbprints) so crooks can not grab a gun and shoot its owner.

Guns never help with defense. They are always for attacking someone. All guns should be destroyed and people who make and design them should be castrated.
