It all depends on what you want. If you want simple, then go for it. If you want to customize things, then get items separately, but it will cost more.
The two most important things I have found are to have a VERY good center channel (90% of a movie will come from here), and a good sub. Everything else is filler. In my mind, having more than the standard 5.1 is wasting money as it does not make that much difference in sound.

Hi. It all depends on what you would like for a Home Theater System. If you want convenience and ease of operation but are not particular with quality then the Onkyo you have in mind will probably do. However if you want a system to give you the Cinema experience of sight and sound then separates are the way to go.Even if you buy them a bit at a time you will have something worthy for your trouble.
I just like to say a few words to help you understand the equipment better.A surround system can fit into any given space, but how it is implemented is the key to quality sound. In assembling an A/Vsystem it is important to follow the basic rules of Hi. Fi.
[1] The components of a Home Theater System are like links in a chain, and all the links are equally important.
[2] Audio and Video reproduction are damage control jobs.
In any audio system, the signal is passed down a chain.Sound travels from the Source components (DVD,CD Players, Tuner,VCR,Tape,Satellite etc.) to the Control components (Pre-Amp or Surround Processing Pre-Amp) to the Power Amps. and then to the Speakers and in this direction only. The base rule is the signal can never be improved within the chain once it is started. It can only be maintained or degraded. Therefore,Audio and Video reproduction are damage control jobs.If we don't get quality information from the Source, the Pre-Amp.Power Amps. and Speakers cannot improve the signal. No component can improve the signal given to it. what is generated from the Source component will be reproduced ,but not improved,in the chain. Therefore, the goal is to change the signal as little as possible.

this is depends on your choices. If you prefer to have a simple and problem free from fixing the system and satelites or matching them to the maximum capabilities, then i would suggest you purchase a complete set - ready made.
Otherwise, i would suggest you buy the components separately. A complete build up sets are usually at the lower RMS but if you would to build your own system separately you can maximized the output and performance of each component you have purchased.

Since you want a good surround system go separates.
The sound quality will be better and you can buy better speakers to complement your amp.

I would not go with a all in one system. Buying seperate is easier to upgrade. You give yourself more flexibility when by piece by piece
