The measure of whether or not it's a good deal is, whether or not you are you learning anything. If you are satisfied with the quality of the instruction, and you continue to learn each week and advance then you're getting quality lessons. In New York City, lessons on average cost between $20 and $40 for a HALF hour lesson. And between say 40 and 80 for a one hour lesson.

This is a very shaky questions. There are a lot of things that will affect this, where you live, his level of skill, what he is teaching and providing, but let me run you down the basics. As an instructor in the Heart of Texas, standard is 15-20 a half hour, that should help you out right there. Most people who charge this amount though, can read music, I am finishing up my 2 year in Fine Arts, so that is why I charge this much. If he is teaching you how to read chords only, then this play be a little unfair, but if he is teaching you how to read music, sheet music, then it may very well be worth it. If you think you will learn a lot from him, I would definitely go with lessons, because that is a very reasonable price. Make sure that you practice though, no matter what ;D.
