I have 2 yrs exp. in Office Administration. I live & work in Toronto. I just got offered a job. I went for the interview, was told the next day that they found someone else with more experience, so they can't hire me. 2 days after the called me back, asked if i could start work the next day. At the interview, i was told that they pay within $26k range. But today he mentioned that the job is actually $12/hr which makes it $23k. Is this normal or what?

I've been an office manager for over 4 years and I WISH I made $12 an hour!!

If you are figuring $12/hour for a 40 hour week for 52 weeks...
12x40=480/wk times 52 wks= 24960. Which, if you figure in that you will probably get some overtime, that does make it closer to $26k.

Also, they may have figured the value of any health insurance, 401k, or any other benefits into the salary they told you.

it really all depends on the pay structure where you are located. An admin job in CA will start you at about 13 an hour but with certificates and training they always up your pay. If you feel that you were tricked or manipulated speak up it wont hurt at least they know that you noticed and it may be a simple mistake.

Unless the position you originally applied for had more to it then the one you actually got. Hope it all works out!

Tell them you need to make 26K to take the job and they might not hire you. The job may offer up to 26K but you don't have enough experience.
If you take the job you can keep it a while and leave with more experience.
Ask them to review your wages at 60 days and if you are good raise you to 26 then another review at 1 year.

I'm not in Toronto, so I don't know what the going rate it. What's normal in one place may be ridiculous somewhere else, even nearby. To me, that seems low for an urban area.

It sounds to me like they hired someone and for reasons unknown to you and me, she either never started or quit soon after.

It's not inappropriate to ask the boss why you're not getting the 26K mentioned in the interview but 12 bucks an hour instead. Ask when pay upgrades happen assuming job review goes well.

And consider continuing your job search.

A receptionist does not require much skills. I bet they can get teenagers to do it for $10 an hr, so if you don't want it, some kid will grab it..It's all up to you.

Yikes, I'd pass on this offer - too much flip flopping going on with this guy. That's a big red flag!
