I just got a brand new clarinet about a week ago. It's a Buffet R13, and I seem to be having problems with its joints getting stuck, especially the bell. It got stuck once before, but I had my band director get it off, and it took him a while. How can I get the bell unstuck from the lower joint, and prevent this from happening again?

EDIT: I use a ton of cork grease each time before I play because I know this happens, but it still gets stuck....

Alright, thanks for the heat tip! =) I used a hair dryer on it for about 10 seconds and it came right off. Thanks. =)

Don't put heat to a $3000 clarinet!!!!!!! you'll crack the wood.

The only solution is a technician who will adjust the cork. It's not uncommon for a new instrument to need such an adjustment because the atmospheric pressures where you are aren't the same as where it was made.

Take it to a good tech and have him go over it with you. It won't cost much and you'll have your own technician who knows your horn - it's kinda like having your own doctor, but for your clarinet.

PS: heat will swell cork, not shrink it. It also swells the wooden joint.

Ok Well firstly the articulation: The tip to good and fast articulation is SLOW! Practice with a metronme SLOWLY say about ONE semiquaver = 30. This may be really boring at first but it is the only way to get fast articulation! Gradually increase the tempo until you can get up to the tempo that you want! You may be squeaking because you are tensing up your embouchure trying to get the notes! Slowing down will alllow your mouth to relax! Airy sound: You need to concentratre on your breath support! The air needs to be supported through your muscles. Getting this air support is hard to explain in short. Google breath support and you should get some excercises/ explainations to help you! This is the same support that singers need to use so dont worry if that comes into your goggle search! Alternativly it could be your reed! Break in a new reed or try another brand. You could go up a size but this may not be a good idea if you audition is witthin two weeks. you need time to get used to new reeds! Finally the stuck joints! I am not sure what joints you mean If it is the joints joing the clarinet together , where the cork is, you need to just use more cork grease and massage it into the cork! This is a frequent occurance with new clarinets it just takes patience! During practice take 5 minutes to clean out your Clarinet and rotate these joints! Solid practice for 2 hours is not a good idea wihout a break! Take it to your clarinet teacher and they wil show you how! If you mean the metal joints on the Clarinet just use some key oil! Good luck with your audition!

This really shouldn't happen with a brand new instrument (especially one retailing in the $2500 - $3000 range!). The only reason I could imagine it would is that the bell is not matched to the rest of the instrument. Make sure the Buffet mark is on all the pieces and that the serial number on all the parts is the same. If not, you might have been sold something OTHER than a true Buffet R13. If everything is in order, bring it back to the dealer and report the problem. For the price this instrument sells for, it should be perfect in every sense.

One, don't forget to use your cork grease

Two Heat it up with your breath or hold it over a stove. The heat will shrink the cork slightly.

Cork grease should be the answer. If not then go to StanRoys
Music Store on 4th. street in Santa Rosa, or to any music store with repair facilities. If as you state it is new, bring it back to the store from whence it came.
