Minn. Woman Shoots Albino Deer During Opener

(WCCO) On this season's deer opener, a Minnesota woman shot one of the rarest kinds around; an albino deer. Mary Rakotz of Avon got the 6-point buck on Saturday in Mille Lacs County.

She said it was thrilling to see the rare animal, but 100 times more exciting to be able to actually take it home.

"I had heard that it might be in the area, so I thought that here was my chance of a lifetime. So I had to creep a little bit, probably about 40 yards, to get a good place where I could steady myself a little bit. But then I did that and shot and it went right down," said Rakotz.

Rakotz said she isn't sure if she has room to mount the buck, so she's contacted Cabella's to see if they're interested in buying it.

She also said her family and friends are pretty excited for her, and maybe even a little jealous.

From what I understand, taking an Albino deer is illegal in Minnesota...isn't it?

I would not have shot it no matter what it "was" a very rare animal that should have been left alone and just admired!

Well i would not have shot it i do shoot deer often but if i was to see that there is no way i would shoot it some people become over powered by their feelings and will do anything to get themselves known and so they can say "yes i shot that" shooting an albino deer is taking it too far. The same applies to fishing i have seen people kill specimen fish just to say i caught this look at me! Also being an albino it was probaly very easy to shoot.

#1 It's not illegal to shoot an Albino Deer in Illinois. "H" is absolutely correct that true Albino Deer are basically a genetic freak of nature. They do not survive usually and if allowed to breed, the will produce other Deer with genetic disorders,as well as physical deformities..Not pretty.. and left alone, will create havoc among the normal Deer population. Granted they are beautiful animals...BUT..This is the reality. I have several friends that have taken Deer that were partial Albino's but not pure Albino's. Most State Fish and Wildlife Agencies and Game Biologists here in the U.S. would want Hunters to cull these animals out of the existing herds.

Albino deer are aberrations that don't usually survive very long, since true albinos can't see during the day and they stick out for any predator that might be around. Yes they are rare but I don't believe they are protected. Now some kind of white deer might be protected but albinos are just deer with the albino gene that doesn't help it survive very well in the wild. Someone was going to shoot it.

Best.

It is illeagal to shoot any true albino deer in Il also. BUT if the deer has any brown color to it at all it can be shot legally. If you look at a 2007 deer hunting Information sheet that DNR sends you in the mail it states "Totally white white-tailed deer are protected by Law and are Illeagal to Kill". I personally have not seen a true albono live deer but in Springfield IL there was a deer killed legally that had some brown on its tarsal glands but was white other than that andDNR was backing the hunter. It would take me a while to figure out wiether or not I would shoot one. Well I guess I would with at least a camera.

I'd shoot an albino deer in a red hot second, and grin all the way to the taxidermist!!!!

It ain't like she shot freaking Bambi! It is just a white deer, not a cartoon character. If she hadn't shot it, someone else would have, or it would have been killed by a bear or coyote, or wolf.

Why are you so worked up about it?
