My son needs a word processing program that is compatible with MS Word. He types up assignments and the like at home and emails them to school. I tried a program called Abiword, but when the teacher opened it at the other end she couldn't make sense of it. I'm currently downloading OpenOffice.

yes OpenOffice will do the trick.

There is a setting in oO that you should select, or even during the installation, it asks "associate OpenOffice with Word, Excel, etc"

When you set OpenOffice to save as a Word file and open Word files it's pretty seemless. OpenOffice is great. I've had it installed on a spare PC for about 2 years now.
