i love nikons.
but my personal FAVORITEEEEEE is my fujifilm s5000,
it may be an older model, but sometimes the older the better.
sometimes, having the gadgets that aren't that up to date
can really show people that it's really the photographer within
rather than just the camera.

I think if you are serious about photography, you should invest in the best camera you can afford. I have an EOS Digital Rebel which has different lenses you can purchase (i.e., macro). You have the ability to disable the auto focus which is a plus as you may try to take pictures of something and the camera insists on focusing on something else. There are other cameras on the market that are wonderful in your price range. Old school cameras are fantastic and lend their artistic merit! (I started out with a Canon manual focus camera from the 80's. It was so heavy... I loved the weight of it.) Investing in a nice Photoshop program is useful as well.

First, plan on attending school and majoring in photography/fine arts. Your first year in school will probably require a fully manual 35mm film camera - check with the school. Once you understand light and composition and ISO and f-stop and shutter speed then you'll move to a digital camera.

If school isn't possible at this time then I suggest you buy a Pentax K1000 with a 50mm lens and the Owner's Manual. Then buy "Object & Image: An Introduction To Photography, Third Edition" by George M. Craven.

You might also check the New York Institute of Photography (nyip.com). They offer correspondence courses and have been in business since 1910.

Well in film there is the Canon Rebel EOS for $200

Lenses for this camera are interchangable with the Digital Rebel should you decide to step up.

And there is the Fuji 700 and Kodak 712 priced just around $200+ which are digital.

I currently own Nikon N80/F80 (SLR) and Nikon D50 (Digital SLR), and I love them!! I don't know if you're interested buying a used or a refurbished camera, but I found in Amazon, the cheapest cost for N80/F80 is like $149 (body only): http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00006I5JT/sr=/qid=/ref=olp_tab_refurbished/002-9877092-4260008?ie=UTF8&coliid=&me=&qid=&sr=&seller=&colid=&condition=refurbished

If you want something new and good Digital SLR camera, the cheapest will cost you $550 (Nikon D40 w/ 18 - 55 mm Lens): http://www.adorama.com/INKD40K.html

antoni is right...get a good dslr (everyone pro uses canon mostly) and atleast take some classes at a community college so you can find your way around a camera and learn how to compose some.
