I want to learn guitar and need to know what kind of guitar I should get. I want something thats good quality and will last. I also need something that works for a good range of styles. I know Fender and Gibson are good, but most their stuff is out of my price range. I need something that will work as my skill increases, I have had people say that some guitars are easier to learn on, but then dont work as well later. I dont need anything "easy", I have LOTS of musical experience so I just need good quality really, not anything "beginners" (Guitar will be my 5th instrument)
Also, I would prefer electric.

Buy the best guitar you can afford. If you already have an ear for music, go to the music store, and listen to a few. If they are out of your price range, save up and by the best one you can afford. Ad your skill improves, you'll be able to continue using the same instrument and not have to replace it because it can't produce high quality sound. There are good Fender Stratocasters and Telecasters for $400 to $500.

If you're just starting with the guitar, regardless of how good a musical ear you have, I'd recommend starting with an acoustic guitar rather than an electric. An acoustic will help you get your hands in shape to play.

You ahve to go out and play with them and get some opions for different guitarists.

I heard the Mexican Fenders were very good as were the Japanese ones.

Go to hock shops with someone who knows.

Check E-bay

Look for a used American Fender Mustang or Telescaster.

If it's stock the first thing you;ll have to do is change the bridge.

Old used Hondos can sometimes be good.

Ibanez makes some low priced good guitars still.

Just make sure you get a good set of Grover pegs and that the neck has never been cracked broken and that the frets are not totally worn down.

Watch for buzzes in the strings and the inability to intonate it.

Make sure it feels comfortable.

If worse comes to worse there's alway the Squire.

It's one you'll give away to a nephew in 4 years after you own an American Les Paul or Strat.

A guitar is a tool for making music. You play the guitar, not the other way around. (I have had people say that some guitars are easier to learn on, but then dont work as well later. I dont need anything "easy"). The great jazz musician Sonny Rollins once had his sax stolen before a gig. So he went to a local pawn shop and bought a "student" model, and then played his show. Nobody knew the difference.

You can find new electric guitars cheap in discount stores, like Wal-Mart. Some even come in a set with a small amp.

Or, get a cheap one on ebay.

I recommend a Berhinger guitar OR an Epiphone Les Paul. An acoustic really isn't that bad either. A Fender Squeir is the best out of the three listed. If you can get a Fender Squeir Strat, go for it.

you could go for the gibson epiphone les paul junior, typically run just over a hundred bucks. you could also try a gibson epiphone special. they are a really nice looking guitar, and have a pretty smooth fretboard. im not sure what your price range is but one of these are about 300-350$, like another posted, the squier is fenders cheaper version of the stratocaster/tele, the run just over a hundred bucks, i think the telecaster is a bit more.those are both electric by the way.hope this helps!Good luck.
