I have a 3 month old chi who doesn't catch on to potty training. Anyone have any stories how they trained theirs and how long it took? He tears up pee pads, someone said do litter but he eats it and vet said that isn't healthy. I'm at a loss, he will go outside occasionally but not if it is cold or raining. Help

I wanted serious help, if some of you have nothing constructive to say, why say it? Surely you have something better to do than act like an illiterate idiot on here?

Go to the pet store and buy the wee-wee pad holder. It is designed to hold the pad in place for puppies who think the pad is a toy. Take the dog out as soon as he/she finishes eating each meal...and when he/she come back inside give them a small treat and praise he/she. Have a daily routine to follow and the dog will start to catch on. I have 2 chihuahuas that also don't like going outside if its too cold and I also have a Golden Ret. and as soon as he goes out the 2 little ones follow...it helps to have an older dog that is already house trained. The link below will show you what the pad holder is and how it works. Good Luck!

Such a small dog and so cold and miserable outside, you will need to get used to the idea of providing an indoor place.
As soon as he is finished a meal take him to the spot where you want him to go - take him on a lead. Use a command like "Toilet", and if he goes in the right place then give heaps of praise. I think newspaper is ok, but some worry that the dog will think any newspaper around the house may become a place that the dog will pee.
Also it is sometimes recommended to limit the dogs access to the house, keep him confined to just one or 2 rooms, that way it is easier to monitor.
Any place the dog has peed will then have the scent of the urine and will be attractive for the dog to pee there again.
Buy a commercial animal scent remover and clean thoroughly, or you can use BiCarb Soda, sprinkle dry onto the spot then use white vinegar to make it all fizz up and remove all traces of the pee.

Welcome to the world of owning a dog! It's good to see you are potty training your puppy at an early age. Pee pads work for some dogs; some dogs tear them up, like in your case! I would use the old-fashioned way, old newspaper! I have potty train many puppies using this method.
Place the newspaper near the door the dog will use to go out potty.
Place the puppy on the newspaper after it eats or drinks. The puppy will sniff the paper and probably walk away from it. This is just to acclaimate him.
Everytime you see the puppy start to squat, give him a stern "No" and pick him up quickly and place him on the paper.
When the puppy does its business on the paper, praise him and tell him good dog. Act very excitied, give him lots of love! You may even want to give him a treat afterwards to start out with.
Potty training consists of watching your dog closely. If your not home all the time, you may want to crate the puppy in the beginning and put paper down in the corner of the crate away from his food bowl.
The puppy will learn that going on the paper means he will be rewarded.
If you have a fence or want to walk the door, after meal time take him out and when he goes potty, praise him.
Hope that helped! Best of luck. :)

Chihuahua's have short attention spans, so its really difficult for them to learn any sort of tricks, or anything else such as potty training. I highly suggest bringing it to a professional trainer.
If money is a problem, try using the spray bottle method. (every time it starts to go to the bathroom on the floor, spray it lightly in the face and say "NO!" Then bring it outside. When it DOES go outside, use rewards such as treats, and petting it playfully, so it knows it has done something right. It will catch on eventually.
Hope this helps!

I hope you have some time on your hands. Block off as many rooms and small areas you can. You have to watch closely. Sniffing around is a sign he's ready to go. Roll up a newspaper and secure it with tape or a rubber-band. Make sure it's still loose enough to make noise. The newspaper won't hurt them but it scares them to death! Stear him toward the door. Try to let him stear himself. Scratch his paws on the door and let him out. He is a little scared so give him some extra time. Give him a treat when finished. Don't treat him any other time! Don't do any other training until this one is a success. I tought my puppy in 2 wks this way. Every dog is different. Be patient. LOL =}

Chihuahua's are very hard to potty train. But, it is very possible! You need to make sure you are being consistant. Make sure you are taking your pup out every hour! Even at night. Take him on the leash to let him know that you are out there to use the bathroom. Not to fool around. Stay out there until he uses the bathroom and if not, give it about 15 minutes just to be sure. After he has used the bathroom outside, give him a treat and say "Good Dog". Also, make sure you take him out to the same spot every time. If he smells spots where he has used the bathroom before, it will help to enforce the idea of where he should be using the potty. You can also use the "kennel training", you keep your dog in a kennel at night or when you aren't able to watch him. Dogs usually won't use the bathroom when they know that they are going to be laying in it. That way you won't find "presents" when you aren't able to watch him. And make double sure to take him out soon after he eats and not to feed him at night. Hope this helps! Good luck!

They are really tough to housebreak.
Most people just break them to the pee pads and leave it at that.
If you are using litter try using one of the all natural litters so if the dog eats it it would not hurt him or her.
Good luck on the training

Here's a site with some great tips on potty training your puppy:
http://www.puppywonderland.com/pottytraining.htm
With my dogs, I was consistent in taking them out every 2 hours for the first couple weeks. They quickly learned outdoors was the appropriate potty, and stopped having accidents. Just be patient, and take him out after he eats, before bed, etc. He'll learn eventually. Give lots of treats!

Well I know of something... If your dog pees in your house put the rag or whatever you use to clean it up outside if the chihuahua is male put it by a tree. You could also do the same with poo. Also remember first thing in the morning take him OUTSIDE! When your chihuahua is with you if he takes a nap strictly take him outside. Hope that helps!

May I please suggest that you buy one book on training if you buy no other in you life. I have trained dogs for many years off and on and it is the bible of training books. go and buy "Smarter Than You Think." The tips in there will help you more than any of us can with this situation and that includes me who has trained everything from Chihuahua's to Cane Corso's.
Good luck to you. You have bought the second hardest dog in the world to potty train!
But don't loose hope. It can be done!
