It WAS its own city (had its own mayor) until 1898 when it consolidated with Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island to become New York City.

Brooklyn is a borough of New York City. Brooklyn is also known as Kings County.

Brooklyn up until 1898 was it's own city. At that point, Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island all were merged together to create what we know today as New York City.

So to answer your question, today Brooklyn is known as a borough--think of Brooklyn as a very large neighborhood within New York City.

Yes and no. Brooklyn was at on time its own city. Now its a city incorporated into NYC and therefore the taxes and services are taken by, but also provided by NYC as a whole. It is now simply a boro. It gets confusing doesnt it? But when addressing a letter here is Brooklyn, NY. You should see what happens with Queens....
