You want to have something before. Not only is your body in a highly catabolic state when you first wake up (muscle wasting state, or hypoglycemic as mentioned above), you don't want any muscle tissue to be utilized for energy during exercise. The idea of the body using fatty acids for energy is old school; the goal of any exercise program designed for bodyfat loss and health should always be to raise the metabolism. That by far is going to be the most effective for overall bodyfat loss as you burn more calories in a 24 hour period than if you're just focused on burning calories, or fat, during the exercise only. Plus, the more muscle mass you have, or retain, the higher your metabolic rate will be.

Your exercise routine will be most effective if it's done at a high intensity. This means you'll need fuel for the workout in the form of glycogens, meaning a meal before the workout. High intensity = higher metabolic rate = higher GH and testosterone levels (fat burning hormones).

After - it's better to exercise on an empty stomach because you'll actually burn a greater percentage of fat while you are working out since your glycogen stores (the fuel you get from stored carbohydrate) won't be as full.

Just remember to hydrate, drink some water before you start - a cup is enough to get you going - and as much as you feel you need while exercising.

Physiology studies from exercise research labs have supported this. Unless you plan on exercising more than 45-60 min. at high intensity, you won't suffer from your hypoglycemic state prior to breakfast.

My karate instructor always told us two hours before or two hours afterwards-eating less than two hours prior makes you sluggish, and with the intensity of the exercise, less than two hours afterwards may make you sick. I followed this for step aerobics too because it's pretty intense.

you need energy to be able to exercise at a high enough level of intensity for it to be optimum for health. when you wake in the morning the body is in a hypoglycemic state, you do not want to exercise in this state as it's very catabolic.

eat something before, otherwise you will feel sick during your workout, then eat a bit more afterwards. i'd recommend something like fruit, protein bar, or a nutrigrain bar before hand, then a meal afterwards. make sure you let it settle for a good 15-20 minutes before you begin though.

if you eat before you should wait at least a half hour after eating so that you aren't digesting your food and at the same time burning the calories you just took in. be careful. for that reason, i suggest eating AFTER working out unless you plan on waiting.

AFTER. 2 reasons, one being that your digestive tract needs blood to digest your food, and so do your muscles (even more so when you exersize) therefore giving you stomach cramps. Secondly, exersize bosts your metabolism (meaning you'll be able to burn off what you eat for breakfast)
