I am going to be a lead in my university's theatre play. We are putting on a play called "The Angry Atheist".
I do not lie though, and the play calls for me to lie during some of my lines. I am wondering if it is okay for me to lie in this situation, since its just acting. I NEVER knowingly tell a lie.
Here is a synopsis of the story:
I am a young homosexual atheist who lies, does drugs, and steals. I am suicidal and all. Then I finally find my way to Jesus Christ and I turn over my life as a homo, thief, and liar for a life devoted to Jesus Christ.

Congrats on two counts, not lieing and getting the lead! It's not lieing it's acting. Besides this sounds like a good lesson for the audience. Nobody is who they portray while they are acting. Sounds like a great play, be the best liar you can be and your character's salvation will be seen brighter! God Bless. Do you go to a Christian College?

Sounds like a comedy!

Uh duh, well if you're ACTING you are not LYING
And is it okay for Emperor Constantine to lie about Jesus' divinity and tenets of his belief for the purpose of keeping power over the growing followers of Jesus, convincing people that this prophet was a GOD and no human could aspire to cast of material things and live as he did? It would sure be bad for the emperor, the president, and Halliburton if capitalists everywhere followed the TRUE teachings of Jesus, also we wouldn't need a priest... Bad for the very wealthy church... Oh, and BY THE WAY, you supposedly loving Christian, people are BORN gay, "homo" is a offensive slur, and you cannot be "cured" of being gay by finding God, because being gay is not a disease, its actually a pretty nifty way of God controlling our growing population before this planet reaches carrying capacity. I guess two men loving eachother and getting married is much worse than say, attacking and bombing an entire country based on LIES.
God is everywhere and he/she really doesn't have an ego or care what you call him or send you to hell for not following the sexist racist tenets of a book written by humans. And I doubt any university, well no respectable one, would put on a play like that, so hah, you are already a liar, but I guess that's okay if you're lying to spread you bigotry, oops i mean religion. Hon, you have been BAMBOOZLED.

first of all, something hit me when i read your question and synopsis of the story-
1- you only asked if you should lie in the play, because you do not knowingly lie. but then the synopsis said, you do drugs, and steal and are a young homosexual- I pray that you do not do these things either in your real life.
2- the play seems to be showing what Christ can do to someone who comes to Him- so play the part all of it, and pray that whoever comes to the play will turn to Christ like your character did.
EDIT- I was not thinking that you do any of these-I still feel, go ahead and use this as a testimony to how God can change a life

If somebody is interior the act of killing yet another person, and you are able to intrude to end the killing yet in basic terms by potential of killing the undesirable guy, ok, kill him. otherwise, No, alongside with preemptive strikes. in case you're able to misinform the Nazis and say that the Jewish young ones interior the lower back of the truck are Presbyterians, very nicely to lie. ethical relativism is real, yet you're able to be actual, not in basic terms making justifications.

I'm sure one more lie in this stinking pit of a play won't even be noticed.
Don't you think you'd be better off at a real university?

No you should not do the play, you can't reform from being a "homo", the play is spreading hate which goes against the teachings of Jesus.

Lying for the sake of your art is probably OK; but be prepared to draw the line - what about nudity or profanity or blasphemy?
Is there anything you would refuse to do for your craft?
(and I know you didn't ask this - but as a gay Christian I find your play bogus and offensive and mean-spirited - maybe you could tell me what Jesus said about homosexuality - I'm still searching my bible looking for any such reference)

Isn't playing a role always lying? Because you are always required to say things that aren't true in it?
I'm just browsing curiously...I have to say the subject matter of your play revolts me. It's implausible, partionising and a bit bizarre to be honest. Maybe you could resign your role because of these problems instead of a silly quibble about lying?

Sorry, I'm busy writing the script for "The Angry Christian", about a closeted gay, drug abusing, self-hating fundamenatalist who spends his life trying to cause trouble in other peoples' lives.
My neighbor is the model for the lead character.
But mine will have a happy ending: he'll accept himself for who he is, realize his beliefs are absurd and embark on a life as a humanist, helping others.
EDIT: Ah, Liberty University. No wonder the play has such a Stalinist ending.
