it is not recommended for food consumption right after a workout since your body is already depleted of energy during your workout and will not be primed to digest solids. rather, drink orange juice, gatorade or practically anything with sugar after your workout since carbohydrates (glucose, sucrose etc it does not matter) are essential in refueling your muscles and to "sweep" the protein into your muscles. if you do decide to take a carb shake, it is obvious why you should take a protein shake afterwards (for protein synthesis).

as for food, you can eat after 30 minutes of your workout. however if you do decide to eat right after a workout, i would recommend indulging in something not heavy like meat.

* Egg, large - 6 grams protein
* Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams
* Cottage cheese, ½ cup - 15 grams
* Yogurt, 1 cup – usually 8-12 grams, check label
* Soft cheeses (Mozzarella, Brie, Camembert) – 6 grams per oz
* Medium cheeses (Cheddar, Swiss) – 7 or 8 grams per oz
* Hard cheeses (Parmesan) – 10 grams per oz
* Tofu, ½ cup 20 grams protein
* Tofu, 1 oz, 2.3 grams
* Soy milk, 1 cup - 6 -10 grams
* Most beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans
* Soy beans, ½ cup cooked – 14 grams protein
* Split peas, ½ cup cooked – 8 grams
* Almonds, ¼ cup – 8 grams
* Cashews, ¼ cup – 5 grams
* Pecans, ¼ cup – 2.5 grams
* Sunflower seeds, ¼ cup – 6 grams
* Pumpkin seeds, ¼ cup – 19 grams
* Flax seeds – ¼ cup – 8 grams
* oatmeal – ½ cup – 5 grams
* whole grain bread – 2 slices – 4 grams

These are all good choices because they're loaded in protein but easily digested but once again nothing beats a protein shake when it comes to actual quality protein in bulk but not heavy on the stomach.

* Protein Shake – 1 scoop (30 g) – 23-24 grams
