Who deserves it the most?
Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson
Now, with only 2 races to go Johnson leads the points standings by 30 points.
He has 9 wins and 3 consecutive; Gordon has 6 and 2 of the last 5 races?
For all the Gordon fans (including myself) I really believe that Gordon deserves it the most.
Wins may be cool but look at the regular season.
Gordon completely dominated those 26 races and had a huge lead, which could've given him the championship by now.
I know there are many answerers who just have to crack a joke at my standpoint. Don't embarrass yourselves, idiots.
What do you think?

My question only asked about an opinion on who deserved it

Whoever earns the most points when it is all said and done, deserves to win. Enough said!

Both are extremely good race car drivers and both are deserving. As for who deserves it the most, it should be Jeff. He could be screwed again by the Chase. He was should dominant and very importantly consistent. Pretty much every finish was a top 10. Jimmie was kind of fading as the season approached the chase. He's winning when it counts, but the Chase really needs to be reformatted in a way that it closes the gap up, but still reflects what happened in the season.

As big as a Jeff Gordon fan I am, I am going to say Jimmie will win for the consecutive year. He has the momentum and the tide turned in his favor after 26 races.

I'm a huge Gordon fan, and do hope that he wins the championship. I don't like this Chase format, and hate the fact that his points lead was erased.

BUT, I must admit something...... The run that Jimmie Johnson has had the past few races will make it a bit easier to live with if Gordon loses. I mean.....9 races and three in a row are impressive as heck. I couldn't honestly say that Jimmie Johnson doesn't deserve the championship......I just think that Jeff deserves it more.

EDIT: Holy COW Crunch!!! Your answer may be right, but it's insanely long!! I got lost reading it three different times!

Sure Gordon has been a little (very little) more consistent than JJ, but if you can win 3 more (to date) races than the 2nd place guy, you don't need to be quite as consistent in some of the earlier races.

I am by no means a JJ "fan" but I definitely appreciate what he has been able to do this season, capping it off with the finish at Texas! Now that's the way to go after the win...took lots of skill (not to mention, some big grapefruits) to pull that off. Think Gordon would have risked his season to beat Kenseth like JJ did? I don't think so.

JJ earned a lot of respect from me for going for it, when he could have just laid back, safely finished second, and still left with the points lead. Winning is what NASCAR was built on.

I just hope neither guy has any bad luck in the next two races, and it can come down to simply who is the better racer. But in my opinion, it's Jimmie Johnson's Cup to lose.

I'm a #24 fan myself and a couple weeks ago i'd say hands down Gordon deserves to win it.But now with nine wins Jimmie has indeed made a case for himself. They both have had great years so far.I'm a fan who's all about the W's.Nascar took a tiny step this year by giving bonus points to a race winner, now they should go all the way increase the bonus to say 50 and scrap the chase. So if Kenseth ever agains gets a big lead by finishing well but not winning all a driver has to do is win.Finishing well counts but as they say "winning isn't everything ,,,it's the......."

There is no doubt that both jimmy and jeff have had great seasons but technicaly Jeff Gordon has had a better one with a better average finish but jimmy has had the wins. Jimmy is a good driver no doubt about that but he wouldnt be in the position hes in right now if it wernt for jeff. jeff gordon has always been on rout to win 7 championships and i believe if he wins this year, he will be right on track. What i love about nascar fans is that when a good driver with little respect wins the championship by more than 400 points, they complain and then when a driver who has a little more respect looses the championship because of the points system that was put in place because of the lesser respected guy winning, we cry again. Im not saying that jeff is down and out. he has a great chance in the next 2 races to pull back 30 points but im saying that if he doesnt win, nascar is going to rethink their points system again because the "best driver" didnt win the championship. Jeff Gordon deserves this championship. his crew chief deserves this championship. hes the best driver out there and he has proven that. good luck with the last 2 races and go get them!

You're a bit off. Gordon did NOT dominate 26 races. the first couple he struggled.especiallyin the end he had HORRIBLE performances right before the chase! if it was up to me that would knock him out of the chase. do so good then crap out right before ... jr deserved it more at that point. he was racing his guts and hearts out, anything and everything to win and make the chase. but didn't. gordon gets to suck the last some races before the chase? makes the chase? where's the justice in that? none. wrong. bullcrap. gordon doesn't deserve to be in the chase. Get your facts right next time.

Whoever has the points lead when the checkered flag drops at Homestead. NASCAR has made the rules, and every driver and fan must abide by it. We don't have to like it, but it is what it is.

Jimmie also would have had another win when the chase came to be. Jeff is not the only one who did not benefit from the chase format. You just have to adjust and quit thinking about the old way. It's done and over with. Live in the now.

You wouldn't be one of those who were whining following 2003 were you? You know, back in the day when season long consistency overshadowed a few more wins coupled with a few more DNF's.

Championships are still determined by season long consistency and by winning races, just like always.

Consistency being able to finish with winning the best possible outcome of a finish.

If Gordon can't muster what is necessary under the rules to win a Cup, he doesn't deserve it.

Does the NFL Superbowl champion get the Title by what they did in the "regular season"?

Nope.

They have to get to the game and then win it. Even if they are unbeaten entering the game, a 20-1 season record for the losing team in the Superbowl still makes them the loser. The team that overcomes a little adversity then performs well throughout the playoffs and wins the Superbowl gets the Lombardi Trophy.

The true mark of a champion is the capability to step it up when called for. The coveted Cup is on the line. Now or never!

The 48 has stepped it up while the 24 has some steppin' up left to do. Three in a row at crunch time and 5 of the last 10 is steppin' out.

A further mark of a Champion is the ability to overcome adversity, and Jimmie had more of that than usual --so far-- this year than Gordon, who wouldn't have had such a large meaningless point total.

(JJ earned 93 points in 4 DNF’s, all crashes while Gordon was racking up 607 points. Gordon gave back only 94 points with 1 DNF crash at Charlotte for a 320 point cumulative luck effect)

Why should those 5 misfortunate races carry more weight than the other 29 or the last 10, where they have gone or likely will go head to head, competing on the track?

All NASCAR has done with the chase pertaining to the 12 most consistent drivers in the first 26 races is throw out the bad luck points as well as the good luck points and made it a fair fight in a 10 race shoot out.

The point total that matters will be added up November 19, 2007.

Just trying to inject a little reality. Wishing and hoping that if Johnson wins the Cup he should have an asterisk beside his name for being behind in a meaningless point total isn’t going to happen.

Ladies and gents, I've been following races for 48 years and the last ten laps at Texas is what it's all about. That was both fun and special. Oh, the special part.......it meant something!

Just so you know where I stand, with no doubts, if Johnson wants good in with a "lot" of Junior fans, a nice way to warm our hearts would be to sweep the last 2 races. Anybody that could do that, 5 in a row and 10 of 15 to close it out, I'd have to give him his due respect. If Gordon pulls it out, well that deserves some respect, too!

Man, I wish we had the Chase when Senior was racin', that would have been something to see. Put it on the line and tell him he had to race for it!!! Oh Yeaaahh. I can see that famous grin now.

Was it Tina, that posted the question awhile back about a concurrent dual Championship?

If it was, I wouldn’t go quite as far as awarding a Champion's crown to each, but I wouldn’t mind an asterisk beside the name that "dominated" the fantasy season, even if he does go on to win the Chase.

That way we can look back through the records and find who really had what it took to win it and who choked when it mattered.

That is why I don’t believe we will hear Gordon whining too much about it if he loses. Only if he wins it and you know why? Because, it was hard to do.

One more point on the luck factor; it consistently raises it ugly head.

Imagine, if you will, the undefeated Patriots losing Brady to a broken arm in the Superbowl. It becomes an adversity to be overcome in pursuit of greatness.

We could see a similar deal where each driver may have a win while the other struggles. Lord knows their both due, Jeff being more so. It could all come down to who finished 34th instead of 35th. Which one has the most fight left in them?

This should be good to watch!

Not to fond of either at the moment but at this point I don't care if they finish 1-2, long as Jimmie finishes 1st.

In my opinion Jeff has already wrapped up his SIXTH championship. Jeff would be leading the points by over 400 pts under the old points system. Jeff's had one of the most dominant seasons in the modern era of NASCAR and it could all be erased and forgotten because of a t.v. ratings grabbing tactic of changing the points system to 'the chase'. This isn't the first time this scenario has unfolded. Let's not forget the last championship he was screwed out of in 2004. He's the best and most accomplished driver out there. Just look at his stats, no one else even comes close. Congrats Jeff Gordon, on your 6th Cup Chamiponship!
