I was wondering how not to believe in a God or Deity, I was wondering can anyone reccomend any 400+ page books explaining to me how not to believe in a God, justifying this non-belief and defining Atheism for me?

Afterall it all seems such a hard concept to grasp.

There is no reason for you not to believe in a god. Go right ahead and don't trouble yourself with the 400 + page books. If the concept is difficult for you to grasp it may be just as well that you don't strain yourself. In the long run, whatever makes you comfortable and gives you sense of community and purpose is perfectly all right.

Your question is non-sequitr. Obviously, you already believe in "God", so you might as well ask me how I can tell you not to believe in blue. You are assuming that atheism is a deeply rationalized, well thought-out belief system. It isn't. Atheism is a purely intellectual position. The position of an atheist is thus: I do not actively disbelieve in any god or deity; rather, I simply lack belief in any god or deity. You've stated this is a hard concept to grasp. The reason you have difficulty grasping this is due to the fact that you cannot accept your own position as being anything other than absolutely true. You are a theist because you have interpreted some events, experiences or phenomenon in your life as only being possible due to the existence of some god or deity. An atheist, on the other hand, is the opposite. An atheist is someone who has never interpreted any event, experience or phenomenon as only being possible because of the existence of some god or deity. In short, an theist is a theist because he/she feels he/she has some reason to be....the atheist is without any reason to believe. Hopefully, this explains it for you. If it doesn't...well...maybe if I ask "how do you not believe in unicorns?", you'll get it.

Atheism is just not having a belief in God. Why is it a hard concept for you to grasp? Can you prove that there is a God? Of course not. I really don't think your going to find a book telling you how not to believe in God but you can certainly find books on why people do not. Also a good site to visit is the Freedom From Religion website. They can suggest a lot of good reading material. www.ffrf.org

I assume your referring to the biblical God.

Quite simple. Believe the entire bible.

Then attempt to resolve the conflicts within the bible. You will fail to justify the command (or permission) from God for violence and slavery. Your common sense will be violated by stories about "righteous" persons committing murder, incest, polygamy, and adultery. You will have two choices: 1. Set aside portions of the bible as incorrect, which would imply you do not believe in the biblical God. or 2. You would have to stone the next non-believer to death because you believe the bible to be true, and the bible instructs you to do so.

Jesus' words don't help. He said "he who is without sin . . . ", what he failed to say is that he that doesn't throw the stone will commit a sin per God's standing orders (Jesus upheld the Old Testament as still valid).

So unless you're out there stoning heretics, and their friends, you don't beleive in the biblical God.

People disbelieve in God for many reasons. Some have had life experiences that make belief in a good God irreconcilable. Others, and I think they are many, are actually "rejecting" God more than disbelieving in his existence. Parsing this distinction in the mind is difficult. Others have no cognitive background to make the existence of God meaningful to what they conceive of reality. It's cultural. Others have some intellectual hang ups, but I think many of those is this category first reject, then find intellectual justification afterwards.

Books? Many. I think The Case Against God is the best, a collection of essays by known 20th century intellectuals.

Since the recorded history of humankind began, and no doubt before, there have literally been thousands of gods believed in, and worshipped by humans. Do you believe in any of those others? If not-----why not? Why are any of them any less credible than the one you believe in?

Why do you not believe in the existence of Zeus, or Posiedon? Maybe Thor or Horus? When you can explain to yourself exactly why you don't believe in any of the other gods, you will then understand why I don't believe in yours

Live your life with pure integrity, and you will not need a god or religion.

Believers in god and religion do so because they choose not to always do the right thing and behave correctly . because they know if they do the "believe in god thing", that it is OK to cheat because all you have to do is ask god for forgiveness and you are pardoned. but deep down in your heart, you know you really are a scoundrel.
as I said, live your life with integrity and you will live in peace.
God and religion is NOT the way to peace. you are just fooling yourself. If the reason you choose to do good is because you either fear a god. or want to please a god, then you are good for the wrong reason. You should be good for being good. for your own peace of mind.
