Listen to people who actually live in DC or have lived there...not those who watch the news and think they have the answers.

Parts of Southeast are okay, especially the SE section of Capitol Hill and the Eastern Market neighborhood.

Northwest is the best quadrant of the city. Look in Cleveland Park (especially), Woodley Park, Connecticut Heights, Tenleytown, Friendship Heights and Glover Park. They're more suburban (safer and much less perception of danger at night), yet within the city and still very convenient.

Areas like Dupont Circle, Logan Circle, Adams Morgan and Georgetown are nice but opportunistic criminals like to focus on these areas for sheer density of people out at night.

Actually a lot of the crime has moved OUT of the city and into the Prince George's County suburbs.

In DC, I would avoid the 14th and Girard area--- just a one or two block circle on either side of that intersection that has been exceptionally violent lately. Southeast is also block-by-block; 8th and PA SE is a great neighborhood, but a few blocks further east and it's not so great any more. The Galluadet area has also had more than its share of trouble lately.

You might get robbed just about anywhere--- that's just part of living in the city--- better to learn how to make your home secure and keep yourself safe. I have a friend who has been robbed about 8 times on 19th and Mass Ave NW which is a very high-rent district; he gets robbed because he likes to walk around drunk at 3 in the morning wearing his waiter's uniform. Common sense could prevent that. For your home, a good security system and window-bars (if you drive down Sherman Ave NW you will see some very creative things being done with burgular bars) or, even better, a dog. For yourself, just don't act stupid and chances are you will be just fine.

Do a google search for DC Crime Maps-- MPDC (the police department) provides an online searchable map of the city that shows you the crime statistics for whatever date range you want. And since the neighborhoods can change very quickly, take a few trips through your potential neighborhood at all times of the day and night to see what it's like, before you sign a lease or a mortgage.

PS areas that used to be the ghetto even 5 years ago are the hot real estate markets these days. If you'd bought a home off of 14th Street NW in 2002, you're laughing all the way to the bank (I bought in a crappy neighborhood in 2001 and I'm definitely laughing to the bank). So you might want to take a little bit of a chance on an up-and-coming neighborhood. I've lived in the city since 1990 and seen a lot of changes (was in the burbs before that and the city even before that) but I have never had a real problem with crime, except once my stereo got stolen out of my car. And I've lived in some seriously bad areas. DC is a lot tamer than it used to be and it is an awesome place to live.

Bad parts include SE parts of DC, particularly the Anacostia neighborhood. Parts of Prince Georges County, south of College Park, inside the beltway , are crime ridden as well.

I was born and raised in NW DC in the early 50's. The area is much safer now and is getting better.

Columbia Heights is the absolute worst. Anacostia is a war zone. Parts of Adams Morgan are also bad. Avoid the area around Howard University.

Anacostia. Most places along the Green Line of the Metro, especially where it curves into Maryland. The fringes of Northeast and Southeast DC.

Basically, once you start getting out of downtown, it gets kind of dangerous. Once you hit the "suburbs" of Arlington/Alexandria, though, it gets nice again.

If you want to live somewhere won't you be shot or robbed, live in Northwest. Definitely avoid Southeast.
