With white wine, put cork back in, store in refrigerator and drink within 3days.
Red wine (not my drink) but put cork back in and stand in room temperature (probably same time length)

Hopefully a wine connoisseur will correct me if I'm wrong

There is no set limit. It all depends on the wine. The varietal and how it was fermented can affect the longevity once exposed to oxygen. The fridge will slow the oxidative process for both reds and whites.
The best rule of thumb is your palate. When you don't like the taste anymore, then its done. Count on 2-3 days for most wines but some can go 4-6 days or even longer. Inert gas sprays can be effective, just follow the directions on the can but if you drink your wine within a few days I wouldn't bother. Just drink it until you don't like the taste anymore.

Store opened wine in the refrigerator. This will only keep the wine for three to five days if you have already opened it; make sure the cork is in the bottle as tightly as possible. If you want to keep it in the refrigerator for a longer period of time after opening, purchase a wine stopper and pump, and hope for the best. The important thing is to minimize the wine's exposure to air. If you have a smaller bottle, you may wish to transfer the leftover wine to it, because there will be less air for it to contend with.

3 days sounds about right, if the wine was good shape when it was opened in the first place.

Although I think PitBoss disagrees, I use the Vacuvin on all bottles that I open and I feel that they keep for at least 4-5 days.

Fridge works good too, but its hard to use on reds unless you like them cold, which generally reduces the flavor.
