My girlfriend wanted to buy two pet rats a few months ago and turns out shes allergic to them and her reactions are getting progressively worse. Where can these rats find a proper home? We don't know anyone personally that wants them.
Does the humane society take them?

Most humane societies will not take them. Call around to local pet stores and see if any are willing to take them off of your hands. They usually go for babies; however, they may be willing to take the older ones.

You can also list them on Craigslist and, if you have it, Facebook. I bet you could find someone who is looking for a pet. (Heck, I would take them! I love rats!)

The best way would be to start and ask your friends and family if they would take them. If not try posting up an add on used item sites or put up flyers. Make sure tho that the buyers WILL NOT buy them as feeders. Make sure they want them as pets. If you can't sell them then try to take them to a local shelter. I live in ottawa and we have a site named ottawa.kijiji.ca and usedottawa.com where I've seen people selling/giving away rats before. Try finding sites like these in your town and you should have no problem finding a good home for them.

Call the humane society near you. Some will take rodents. Also, go to http://www.petfinder.com and do a search for "Rat" under the "Small & Furry" category near you - there may be rescue groups that can help you. In fact, there's a rat rescue near Dallas that actually has a waiting list of people wanting to adopt rats.

Do NOT "turn them loose" - they are not equipped to live in the wild.

Go to any search engine type in the word Rat or Rats, there are multitudes of rat lovers out there who are loving enough to take your rats. You can probably find some in your community. Don't listen to these uncaring weirdos about turning them loose...this is cruel and the 2 persons who have their heads up their behind probably just like the view. Feeding them to another animal is cruel, these people would probably eat their own young. Rat Lovers will more than likely able to find someone near you to solve your problem.

There are several options that will work...Craigslist is a great option. There are many good rescues, depending where you live. Even if they are not near you, by contacting them and relating your story, most will find homes for them. Pet owners are far and wide and more likely than not, there's a few close to you. Try Raleigh Rodent Rescue. They can help you. Good Luck! You can also try a message board like...rats_and_mice. Every post is sent all the members. Someone is sure to help you..

That same problem came up with me when my big sis bought two rats and my mom made her get rid of them, so she called up local pet stores to see if any would take them. Turns out that one of the pets stores was short and needed some more so they took them and now they have been put into nice homes.

p.s. all u ppl saying that u can kill them r soo MEAN rats r cool

Take them to the Humane Society. For God's sake do not "let them run free". Pet rats are not equipped to survive in the wild, and wild rats always kill pet rats.

You might offer them to a grammar school, for classroom pets. Rats are very nice pets, we had ours for many years.

If you are in the PA area, there is the Pittsburgh Rat Lovers Club. Have you tried contacting the pet store you purchased from? They may take them back if you explain your situation, but may not give you a refund. Try advertising in the paper if all else fails

Call your local humane society and ask them for recommendations. They are knowledgeable and better equipped to handle this situation than strangers on the internet.

I won't bother telling you not to turn them loose, as you said you want them to find a proper home, so I'd imagine you already know better than that. ;)

If you are in the U.S there is a place on the east coast called Kim's Ark, she is a rat rescue. Even if you you are not close she has foster homes or may be able to tell you of rescues around your area.

There is also a message board for rats that has a place for adoptions.
