I have a friend who likes Handi-Rifles so much that he has six barrels fitted for one of his Handi-Rifles and two or three for another reciever.

He generally uses a 16 1/2" .357 Magnum barrel, or a 16 1/2" .30-30 WCF barrel as his truck gun, even though he has a .223 barrel as well.

Handi rifles are neat, some might say they're quite handy, Boston T. Party in Boston's Gun Bible recommends a .303 Lee Enfield for an inexpensive truck rifle, but the single shot handi may fit your needs. Weight shouldn't be the issue, you're not carrying it.

When I used to have an SUV all I had was a Marlin Papoose, in the compartment under the rear floor.

I have no first hand experience with the handi rifles except that I've handled them in stores.

That might be just a tad bit overkill. If i was going to use a rifle for small game (like what you are talking about) i personally would go with just a 22 hornet in a Superlight Handi Rifle. Highly effective(with a decent scope). (especially with coons and snakes. ). and if you don't find it to your liking you can always just order the 223 barrel for it. Rememeber if you order any extra barrels, you must send them the receiver as well. Just some friendly personal advice.

Ah, no, not really. See, if it's ultra-light, then it's going to give you ultra-high recoil. Plus, it's not always about how much ammunition you have, but how reliable and versatile your caliber of choice is. I myself would go for a .30-.30 lever Winchester of even a good .22 varmint (name?) revolver from Smith & Wesson. Although, I do have to say that the Sturm-Rueger Mini-14 in .223 Remington is fairly reliable for a "utility" rifle.

It sounds good, BUT have you ever considered an over/under rifle and shotgun combo.
For snakes, ESPECIALLY poisonous ones, I prefer a shotgun or a cartridge for which shotshells are made.
As to your 'other' game, a .22 is big enough for everything up to raccoons. (rabbits, squirrels, skunks, etc.)

The final choice is yours however.
AND REMEMBER to LOCK your truck EVERY time you park it if you have a weapon in it. even if only for a few minutes!!

I would suggest the Ruger Ranch Rifle , .223 and a perfect fit for your needs.

try considering the handi-rifle in .357 mag .....CCI sells shotshells for that caliber and the standard .357 should dispatch a racoon very well.....

Sure, just remember that it is a varmint gun, not a deer rifle.

Best.
