if well kept it's a nice car.
truly an "enthusiast's" car is one whose owner is still willing to ([PROPERLY]) repair and continue driving, way after it is practicality and style have gone out of fashion.
volvo's style is practicality, and good value is never out of fashion.
i own 3, 2- series volvo's, ok 2 [the 79 242 i built for my daughter, with lots of ipd suspension componants it rocks].we use the 89 wagon to go to the city and the other 79 245 is a no frills work car other cars are 95 saturn, wife's car and a 90 s-10 w/extend cab, daughter's college car [her volvo is to nice to be allowed to go to school]

I have an 1985 740 GLE with 367,000 kilometers.

I like the new ones but the reason I bought an old Volvo was to spend the minimum amount possible on transportation (bought the car for $900, do all my own maintenance since they are so simple, the four banger gets good mileage).

I am worried about buying anything newer because of all the potential problems (complicated electronics, CV joints, turbos, not being able to fit my hand under the hood) not to mention the higher price.

When the lease on my wife's new car runs out, I'll probably try to find a 240 or a 740 wagon with low miles and run it till it drops.

'90 240 with 200 K and within the last couple of months bought a '93 950 with only 32K on the odometer. This spring finally had to get rid of the '84 240 wagon because of bad transmission and a non-working heater.

Wish I could have kept the wagon, but the cost to get it working again was just too much. $400 for new heater core and blower fan another $700 for the AC and a grand for the trans.

The wagon was pure old school, roll up windows, plastic seats, manual trans.

I could live without the AC, and even without a heater I could deal with that, but the trans was missing both first and second gear and I just had to put her down.

It was a sad day.

I've had eleven Volvos since 1968 and never had any problems with any of them until I bought a new one in 1998. It was a nightmare. I still have my '66 and it will probably outlive me. Volvos were always safe and dependable but I think they have become overly complicated and expensive to repair, just like all other newer car models.
