I just started my first season hunting pheasant with one partner. We dont have have a dog, so we have been trying on foot. I was wondering if its even worth it and how we improve our hunt, what type of areas do pheasant usually hide in.

One of the things I've learned about hunting pheasant without a dog: as you are walking through the cover, stop and wait for a couple min every 20 to 30 yards. Birds that hold very tight will become nervous and often times will flush when they cannot tell where you are. Be very aware of where you partner(s) is/are as the birds will often flush behind you when you do this.

Put a stick with a piece of cloth at the end of the field, and start walking to it from the other end. Pheasant like to run, and when they reach the end of the field, the movement of the cloth will scare them into flushing. The stopping technique works well with this. My Dad and I hunted successfully this way many times out in Western Kansas wheat and Milo fields.

Here is what my Dad,Uncles and Grandpa did. Having no dogs, they brought my cousin, my little brother an I hunting. They used us to flush the birds out of the corn fields. They always had their eyes on us, so we were safe. It worked for them too.

LOL I remember those days, back 24 years ago. They didn't let us have shotguns, but they armed us with BB guns.

LMAO I guess thinking back on that. It did make me feel like I a man then. Armed with a BB gun. Oh well.... Its a memory that I will remember forever and remind me of my late Father,Uncle and Grandpa.

Fields, grassy areas, corn fields, hedge rows, thick ground cover.* Whenever you get the opportunity to hunt with a dog, you will never want to hunt again without one.*...Golden rod.*
