it didn't hurt much, just a quick pinching feeling. they don't numb you, but you do rinse for 1 minute with listerine, which does numb you a little. then they mark it with a marker so you can see exactly where you want to put it. when you decide where, they hold your tongue with a clamp-looking thing, and pierce it with a hollow needle. then they put in your barbell and voila! you are pierced. it does swell for about 3 days, but it shouldn't be too uncomfortable, because they use a super long barbell to allow for the swelling. you will have to rinse you mouth with listerine after every meal, and if you smoke or kiss in between. good luck and take care of your piercing!!!

EDIT: to the person that said you talk differently, i don't. i've had my tongue pierced for 7 years, and people are always surprised to learn that i have it pierced because you can't tell when i talk. SO THERE!!!!

It really depends how you handle pain. When I got mine done i was ok, the clamp seems to hurt more then the actual needle. The worst part is after! You can't talk or eat lol. It's kind of a pain and at the point I was asking myself if this really worth it. All i wanted to do was eat solid food and talk lol. If you get it done make sure you go to someone that knows what they are doing. They should check your tounge for a main vein. If the main vein goes thru the middle of your tounge you CAN NOT get it done. If it is off to the side you are ok. Make sure the place is clean! Good luck

Its not that bad. The pain will subside within 10 seconds and it'll feel numb. You'll live, don't worry.
Also, every human has a different pain tolerance.

They won't numb it. They shouldn't.
If the professional piercer is good at what she/he does, then it'll be very quick.
My friend's tongue swelled about for about 2 weeks. And couldn't talk properly. But after wards, she was fine.

Ok, imagen you're chewing gum right, and speaking to your friend, and you bite down on your tongue like, really hard. You know how your eyes water up real bad, and you can't eat ketchup for like, WEEKS, try that times 10!!!! That is a friggin HOLE in your tongue. You cant smoke, eat salty foods, (at all!!!) cant kiss, cant talk without a friggin lisp for like, EVER, it's painful man. I've seen my friends get it done, and it's even killer to WATCH!! But if you really want to get it, go for it. What's the worst that could happen, you could always just take it out and it would be like you never had it. No regrets:)

Sometimes your tongue swells up for days. You talk like a retard. Great career move. And yes it is the most painful of all piercings.

Same responses I have heard,
Hurts like ****
and others say not too bad.
Personally, I wouldn't get it because it impairs your speech, and don't let anyone tell you different. (And I am sure I will get thumbs down on that comment, but it is the truth.)
Take a listen closely and see the difference.
It is also not appealing in the work field, especially if it is management.
