how do you tell from a good salon to a bad? unique features, expensive prices?

It's not always easy to tell. Sometimes great stylists can work at a bad salon and vice versa. Look for one that is clean, well organized, carries quality products and is busy; it doesn't have to be the most expensive to be good. A price list posted on wall is not good.

It has nothing to do with the salon. It's all to do with the stylist.
Finding a salon is about taking risks. Sometimes it turns out to be drastic and sometimes its great. You never know.
